Virginia Tech just announced that Brent Pry has been relieved of his duties as head football coach at Virginia Tech and offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery has been named in the interim head coach through the remainder of the season. This is Montgomery's first season in Blacksburg.Philip joined the Hokies after spending a season as co-offensive coordinator for the Birmingham Stallions in the United Football League (UFL). Before his time in the profession ranks Montgomery had 20 years of experience at the collegiate level including time as a P5 offensive coordinator and a head coach.During his time as head coach at Tulsa, Montgomery led the Golden Hurricanes to a 43-53 overall record over an 8-year run. The second season was the best for Tulsa, finishing with a 10-3 record. The shortened 2020 season was also positive for the Golden Hurricanes with the team winning the AAC.Brent Pry was let go following a 16-24 career as the Hokies head coach. Both coordinators were replaced after the 2024 season with Tyler Bowen accepting the offensive line coach opening at Ohio State and Chris Marve being fired. Montgomery took over as offensive coordinator and Sam Siefkes was hired from the Arizona Cardinals to take over as defensive coordinator.Virginia Tech has struggled on both sides of the ball to start the season but the offense has shown brighter than the defense. The experience Montgomery brings to the team, as well as the improved production, is what Virginia Tech leadership is leaning on to jump start the team and turn the season around. Virginia Tech will look to get their first win of the season at home in Lane Stadium against Wofford (0-3) this Saturday for a noon kickoff.
