Luka evades question about Nico's firing: 'Focused' on Lakers

Lakers superstar Luka Doncic dodged questions about his reaction to the Mavericks' firing of Nico Harrison on Tuesday, nine months after the general manager traded Dallas' franchise cornerstone to Los Angeles in one of the most shocking moves in NBA history.

"The city of Dallas, the fans, the players, they'll always have a special place in my heart," Doncic said after the Lakers' 121-92 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday, according to Michael Scotto of "The HoopsHype Podcast."

"I thought I was going to stay there forever, but I didn't. So that will always be a special place for me. I will always call it home. But right now, I'm focused on the Lakers and trying to move on. But obviously, always there will be a part of me there. But just trying to move on and focus on what I'm doing here."

Dallas dismissed Harrison after a 3-8 start to the 2025-26 campaign, ending his GM tenure with the team in their fifth year together. The decision took place roughly five months after the Mavericks drafted Cooper Flagg with the first overall pick.

Harrison sent shockwaves through the NBA in February by trading Doncic to the Lakers in a stunning deal that included Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and Los Angeles' 2029 first-round pick going back to the Mavs in return.

Doncic has taken the Association by storm since Dallas acquired him as part of a draft-night trade with the Atlanta Hawks in 2018. The 26-year-old has claimed a Rookie of the Year award, five All-NBA selections, and five All-Star nods. He was also named the Western Conference finals MVP after leading the Mavericks to the NBA Finals in his final full season with the franchise. Dallas fell short on the occasion, losing to the Boston Celtics in five games.

"Right now, I'm just focused on the Lakers. No further comments," Doncic said when asked whether he could envision himself reuniting with the Mavs one day, according to Lakers Nation.

Doncic has averaged 34.9 points, 8.9 assists, and 9.1 rebounds per game in eight appearances with the Lakers this season.
