Tim Howard issues defence of Glazer ownership at Man Utd, he's completely wrong

Manchester United fans continue to protest against the Glazer family as they reach a 20-year milestone as controversial owners.

This weekend Manchester United will host Arsenal in the Premier League.

United fan group The 1958 have arranged a protest ahead of the game to voice their anger at the Glazers and the club’s ‘deliberate assault on fan culture’.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe became co-owner almost a year ago and he too faces scrutiny from fans amid fears of increased prices for season ticket holders as well as a further 200 redundancies for staff.

It doesn’t help that Ruben Amorim is struggling with United’s first-team sitting 14th in the Premier League and out of the domestic cup competitions.

The only way Amorim’s side can turn things around this season is by winning the Europa League outright, which remains a possibility for now.

Tim Howard defends the Glazers

While Manchester United fans have voiced their displeasure with the Glazers for many years and continue to do so despite Ineos’ arrival, Tim Howard appears unable to read the room.

The former United goalkeeper has defended the Glazers’ right to make whichever decisions they wish to having spent ‘billions’ on the club during their ownership.

United have been owned by the American family since 2005, however, fans will argue that the Glazers have not put a penny into the club. They took loans out to complete the takeover which put the club in crippling debt.

Despite all this, Howard defended the Glazers’ controversial approach to owning United.

“I think they have spent money for Manchester United in certain places and I think ultimately the criticism of ownership from the fans, of any club, but if you look at Manchester United, it is often at times one-sided,” he told beIN SPORTS.

“The Glazers own the football club and that in turn is a business.

“What I have always said, because I am an owner [of MLS club Houston Dynamos], when you spend your billions to own a business, you have the right to run it in any way you want.

“That will ultimately prove good or bad business, for sure, but you have the right to run it the way you want and along with that comes criticism but everyone understands that… I think they have spent.

“You can take it a step further and look at other clubs. Everton are in a mess because they have spent, so much so that they got docked points because of PSR.

“I think the Glazers are spending money. When you look at the squad and the amount of money that was paid for the likes of [Jadon] Sancho, [Cristiano] Ronaldo and all these players, the money was spent.

“Was it spent wisely? I am not sure the Glazers make those decisions so there are other parts of that question that need to be answered.”

Instead of putting money into United, the Glazers have been guilty of taking dividends out of the football club and not repaying the debt they are responsible for.

It is disappointing to see a former player like Howard take the opposite side of the argument and stand with the Glazers.

Manchester United fans urged to wear black on Sunday

As well as taking part in the protest, United fans have been urged to wear black to Sunday’s game against Arsenal.

The 1958 issued a plea to fellow fans to wear black as part of the protest ‘to symbolise how the club is slowly dying’ due to bad ownership.

Howard’s comments are only likely to rile up United fans as they won’t prove too popular.

The club is struggling on and off the pitch but United fans are united in their views towards the Glazer family, even if Howard isn’t on their side.
