‘Liverpool told what they must offer to trigger Alexander Isak and Newcastle talks’

Liverpool have been handed a significant transfer update about their pursuit of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.

Isak has impressed at St James’ Park and has become one of the most sought-after strikers in world football.

The Sweden international scored 23 Premier League goals last season as the Toon qualified for the Champions League and won the League Cup.

Liverpool are one of numerous club who will look to test Newcastle’s resolve this summer, but the Toon insist he isn’t for sale.

Newcastle reaffirm their stance

The Reds have already spent over £100m on Bayer Leverkusen duo Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong and have agreed a deal to sign Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez.

Arne Slot though is keen on a striker this summer, especially if Darwin Nunez leaves Anfield.

A deal for Isak looks unlikely with The Athletic’s David Ornstein reporting [June 26] that it could take “150m just to start a conversation.”

Ornstein reiterated Newcastle’s position that they do not want to sell Isak this summer, and the club are keen to renew the striker’s deal.

Speaking on The Athletic’s podcast, Ornstein set out the current situation: “They’re in a strong position with over three years remaining on his [Isak] current deal, as part of which he is already paid well.

“They’ll have no problem offering more, too – he’s at the centre of that ambitious Saudi-led project.

“From the player’s point of view, he has top level football secured with Newcastle’s qualification for next season’s Champions League, and he won the club their first trophy in a long time. He looks to be happy – always with a smile on his face.”

Football Insider verdict

Any deal to sign Isak this summer looks incredibly hard to achieve with Newcastle not entertaining any potential bids.

The club are ready to give Isak a new contract despite him still having three years on his current deal.

Eddie Howe desperately wants to keep him; the striker has been a key part of their success over the past couple of seasons.

Isak is also the complete package, with the ability to be a poacher in the box, strike from long-range, threaten in the air and cause problems running in-behind.

Appearances 86 Goals 54 Assists 9 Isak’s record at Newcastle

At 25, there is potentially more to come from the Swede next season and after bagging 23 goals last season you wouldn’t be surprised if he soon manages to get to the 30 mark.

If Arne Slot could pull off such a signing, then Liverpool would have one of Europe’s strongest attacks with Wirtz and Isak joining Mohammed Salah, who scored 29 Premier League goals last season.

Isak will be playing Champions League football next season, but at Anfield he could win the competition.

The big prizes are more likely to be reached on Merseyside, but Newcastle are playing hardball and Isak is likely to still be on Tyneside next season.
