“Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I’m already on the road to recovery. Can’t wait to be back,” Suryakumar Yadav posted.

Suryakumar Yadav is expected to begin rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

A sports hernia, also known as athletic pubalgia, is a painful soft tissue injury that occurs in the groin area. It most often occurs during sports that require sudden changes of direction or intense twisting movements. It is a different injury from a more common hernia.

This marks Suryakumar’s third surgery in as many years. He had ankle surgery in 2023 and underwent another sports hernia procedure in early 2024.

Earlier this year, Suryakumar was in top form for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025 and was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. He scored 717 runs to finish behind Orange Cap winner Sai Sudharsan (759 runs) in the top run-getters’ list for the season.

In the ICC Men's T20I Batting rankings, Suryakumar Yadav is sixth in the world.

Suryakumar Yadav also boasts of an excellent record as the Indian men’s cricket team’s T20 captain, leading the side in 22 matches and winning 17 of them. He has played 83 T20Is for India and has scored 2598 runs at an average of 38.20 and a strike rate of 167.07.

India’s next T20 assignment will be a three-match away series in Bangladesh in August.
