Gill threw away his wicket while attempting a reverse sweep against Roston Chase on Day 2 right after Rahul and he had guided India past the West Indies’ first innings score.

India had finished the first day of the Ahmedabad Test at 121/2, still trailing by 41 runs. Earlier West Indies skipper Roston Chase had won the toss and opted to bat first. However, on a humid day, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah were able to extract swing in the air and seam of the surface and picked up four and three wickets respectively. The visitors were bundled out for 162 runs, with Justin Greaves being the top scorer with 32 runs.

Playing on red soil is fun, you get more turn and bounce, you enjoy that as a spinner. I would like to thank the coach and management, being the vice captain you are always there and I am happy to do it. I am not the captain yet, Kuldeep has bowled so much for India and Washi is also there, no need to give suggestions as they have all played for a long time.

When you win the toss and get bowled out for 160-odd it is tough to come back from that. Not the performance we were looking for. We have to bat better especially in India you have to put up a big first innings total and that is something we need to look at. The timing was off, when we took the second new ball we had to make the batters play more. Feeling very happy, we did well with both bat and ball. The wicket was slow in the 2nd innings, it just wasn't coming onto the bat, felt like taking 5 wickets here (despite grabbing 3). The batting was good, everyone took responsibility, KL has been making runs since the England tour, Shubman has been good and so have the others.

Kuldeep Yadav has picked up the final wicket to end the game. It has been hammering from India. There has been no point at which the West Indies have looked like they were going to compete in this game. The bowling was pretty ordinary from them, and so was the batting. One can only hope better version of the West Indies will turn up for Delhi. As per India, after a 3-0 loss to New Zealand at home this is a welcome win for them, and they will hope to continue their good form in the next game and win the series. On commentary on day 2 of the Ahmedabad Test, former India head coach Ravi Shastri dispelled the misconception that KL Rahul has been rotated up and down the battinf order. Turning to data, Shastri observed how Rahul has still played a majority of his innings at the top of the order since his last Test century at home, a career-best 199 against England in Chennai in late 2016.

“It’s a misconception that he has gone up and down the order. Because if you actually look at his career, since that Test he opened (2016 against England), he has opened in 94 innings and there have been a total of 110 innings in that period,” said Shastri on commentary, moments before the lunch break on Day 2. “So, it is 90 per cent of the time, he has opened the innings. It’s because of the mix in white-ball cricket that you get a little confused,” he added.

Indian wicket-keeper batter Dhruv Jurel dedicated his maiden Test hundred to the Indian Army. Jurel did his trademark salute celebration after reaching his half-century, and later did the gun salute celebration. After the close of play on the second day, he dedicated the celebration to his father, a Kargil veteran.

“The salute (celebration) after reaching my fifty was for my father, but for the hundred, it was something that I had in my mind for a very long time. Because I have been so close to the Indian Army, I’ve seen my father since my childhood… what we do on the ground and what they do on the battlefield is very difficult and you cannot compare that,” Jurel explained about the celebration.

“I will always have my respect and whatever I will do in the future will be for them. I would like to dedicate this to them (the Indian Army) for what they do. I have seen them closely, how it is like, and I remain very fascinated in those things. I also used to keep asking my father about the same,” he added.

Ravindra Jadeja scores his second ton of the year. It has been a magnificent batting year from him. Although with the ball he has not been as good as he used to be but his batting has gone to a different level altogether. Given his experience of churning triple hundreds in Ranji trophy cricket, he probably is not done here.
