Matthijs de Ligt reacts to Manchester United's new signings - 'We can be really happy'

Man Utd have welcomed three new players to the squad this summer and Benjamin Sesko is set to be the fourth addition.

De Ligt sat down with club media.

Matthijs de Ligt has praised Manchester United's signings in the summer transfer window.

United began the transfer window by announcing the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves. Cunha's release clause of £62.5million was triggered and he signed a five-year contract.

Due to protracted negotiations, it took over a month to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, but a breakthrough was agreed before the USA tour and the forward arrived for £65million plus £6million in add-ons.

Diego Leon completed a medical to finalise his move from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno in January, but the deal outlined that he would move to Old Trafford in the summer window.

United agreed a £3.3million fee, rising to £7m with add-ons, with Cerro Porteno to sign Leon.

Speaking to club media in the USA, De Ligt shared his thoughts on the new additions and said: "I think they have made a really good impression. Bryan [Mbeumo] has only been here a few days, so we can't say too much about him, but he's already scored some goals during training.

"I think we can be really happy with him. Matheus [Cunha] has been here for two weeks now and he's training really well. It's a new club and environment, but he's already been chatting and making jokes with teammates.

"I think that's a really good adaptation from him. Diego [Leon] is a little bit younger, but he is also a player with a lot of talent. He is really strong and physical. He comes from a different system, so tactically he has to learn a little bit, but all the physical and tactical abilities are with him to become a really good player.

"It's been a really good window and hopefully they can help us as much as possible."

De Ligt competed against Cunha and Mbeumo last season and provided further insight.

"I think Matheus is a really technical player, with Brazilian flair, really good with the ball and really fast," he said. "I didn't expect that. He scores goals and gives assists, so a really good addition.

"Bryan is more efficient; he just needs one action to go to his left foot, and he'll score. I think this is one of the biggest qualities in football, the ability to score and I think he can really help us with that."

Reflecting on his first season in Manchester after signing from Bayern Munich, De Ligt added: "I feel there’s still a lot more to come. Sometimes me and other football fans forget I’m still 25, and as a centre-back you’re normally in your prime at 28 or 29, so in that way, I’m still quite young.

“Personally, I’d love to carry on from how I was in March, April – I feel that is the level I could show and should show on a consistent basis. That’s my personal goal, and also to stay fit, that is really important.

"And then the goal with the team is to really show everybody what it is to play for United, and to get a positive vibe again around the team and the club.

“We want to show the fans what United is and that we want to win every game. It’s a nice feeling to start over again, because it gives you a clean slate, and hopefully from the start we can really get these positive vibes back.”
