Cricket in India has undergone a sea change ever since the inception of the Indian Premier League in 2008. The days of a budding cricketer dreaming of earning a million bucks and reaching stardom by only playing international cricket are long gone. One can achieve both by performing in IPL now. Ask Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

The cricketer from Bihar is still in his mid-teens – 14 years to be precise – and already he has become a household name in India. At the IPL 2025, he made a stunning debut hitting a six of the very first ball of his career. And later, he unleashed pandemonium by blasting the quickest century by an Indian in the history of the tournament.

Long before he had made his IPL debut, Suryavanshi had created history. At the two-day IPL mega auction last year, he became the youngest cricketer to land a contract with Rajasthan Royals worth Rs 1.1 crore.

The teenager justified the hype and price by belting 252 runs from seven innings at a strike-rate of 206.55.

He carried his IPL form to United Kingdom and while representing India U-19 against England during a one-day series, racked up 355 runs – the most among the two teams – from five innings at while averaging 71 and boasting strike-rate of 174.02.

The limelight not only earned him fans in India but also in UK where a couple of fans drove six hours to cheer for India U19 team while wearing RR jerseys and later clicking pictures with Suryavanshi.

Suryavanshi though was embarrassed when fans wanted to meet him, recalls his India U19 teammate Vihaan Malhotra.

“Vaibhav ke fans aaye hue the. Wo bol rahe the ki Vaibhav ko bulao, aur use sharm aa rahi thi. Hum use chidhate rehte the (Vaibhav’s fans came to meet him. He was signing autographs but was really embarrassed and we also teased him a lot). He is the youngest of the lot, so we always kind of try and take care of him," Malhotra told timesofindia.com.

Inspiration From Suryavanshi

Malhotra had a productive outing too and left an impression by scoring runs in both the Youth one-dayers and Youth Tests. With 243 runs from five one-day matches, the 18-year-old was the third-highest run-getter while in two Tests, he scored 277 runs – the second-best tally of the series after Ayush Mhatre (340).

“In the fourth one-day, I put on 209 runs for the second wicket with Vaibhav. We both scored centuries, but he smoked 10 sixes, and I had the best seat in the house. His bat swing is something we are in awe of," Malhotra recalls.

While Suryavanshi may be four years younger to Malhotra, the senior batter has no qualms in accepting to have been pumped up by his junior’s IPL exploits.

“Cricketing field always teaches you new things. For example, in my case, I have two absolute superstars in my team. Competition is there, and in the future, people will compare us with them as well but it is good for us. When Vaibhav was hitting sixes for fun in the IPL, it pumped me to work hard," he said.
