'When fans are so against the manager early on, it doesn't bode well'

Chris Sutton

Former Premier League winner on 606

This is absolute nonsense. Seven games in and calling for him to be sacked. Bit of an entitled fanbase there [at Nottingham Forest] as far as I'm concerned.

They overachieved last season. I know their love for Nuno and what have you but, come on, a little bit of respect there. He [Ange Postecoglou] deserves longer.

I find this Nottingham Forest situation really bizarre. When the fans are so against the manager early on, it doesn't bode well and I really feel for Ange Postecoglou.

Football is becoming so short-termism. There is an entitlement to them when they are signing for the manager to be sacked after six or seven games.

Comparisons between Postecoglou & Martin

Comparisons have been made between Ange Postecoglou's situation at Nottingham Forest and the sacking of Rangers boss Russell Martin after just 123 days in charge.

Martin required a police escort to leave the ground on Sunday after the Gers let slip a lead to draw 1-1 at Falkirk, taking his record in the Scottish Premiership this season to just one win in seven matches.

While Postecoglou has had a much shorter time in his position at the City Ground, their poor record of results are similar, while, it is fair to say, supporters at both clubs did not exactly welcome the respective appointments with open arms.

The stats behind the end of Nuno's reign

Newcastle 2-0 Nottingham Forest

Whilst the pressure is on Ange Postecoglou, there is an argument that Nottingham Forest had dropped off slightly before his arrival.

Nuno Espirito Santo started the season with four points from three games but it's a look at their form since April that may be a surprise.

Including a 1-0 win over Manchester United at the City Ground on 1 April, Forest won just four of their final 13 Premier League games under Nuno.

Since 1 April in all competitions:

Won - 4

Lost - 6

Drawn - 3

Much of the confusion over Postecoglou's appointment was the contrast in playing styles between the two managers, in that Nuno would be more defensive minded and so 'Angeball' may not suit Forest.

But although their success was built on defensive solidity, that clean sheet against United was their last one in a competitive match before Nuno's departure.

Could Ange break an unwanted record?

Newcastle 2-0 Nottingham Forest

Ange Postecoglou has been in the job at Nottingham Forest for just 27 days, and an early exit from the City Ground could see him break the record for the shortest managerial reign in Premier League history.

But who else has had a short stay in charge of a Premier League club?

Les Reed - Charlton (7 matches + 40 days)

Rene Meulensteen - Fulham (13 matches + 75 days)

Frank de Boer - Crystal Palace (4 matches + 77 days)

Bob Bradley - Swansea City (11 matches + 84 days)

Quique Sanchez Flores - Watford (10 matches + 85 days)

Nathan Jones - Southampton (8 matches + 94 days)

Jones’s record of seven defeats in eight matches also makes him statistically one of the least successful managers in the Premier League.

His 0.38 points-per-match average is the fourth-lowest, behind only Eric Black, Terry Connor and Jan Siewert.

What is next for Forest?

Newcastle 2-0 Nottingham Forest

If Ange Postecoglou was hoping the fixture list would provide him with something to be optimistic about, he may want to look away now.

There first game back after the international break sees them take on Chelsea at the City Ground before a game against Porto - who are undefeated in the competition - in the Europa League.

The results from these next five are likely to decide if Forest stick or twist when it comes to their new manager.

Next five in all competitions:

Forest v Chelsea - 18 October

Forest v Porto - 23 October

Bournemouth v Forest - 26 October

Forest v Man United - 1 November

SK Sturm Graz v Forest - 6 November

'There is confidence Postecoglou will ride out the storm'

Nick Mashiter

BBC Sport football news reporter

There is confidence Ange Postecoglou will ride out the storm but the victories have to come quickly.

The visit of Chelsea follows the international break before Porto - who have won nine of their 10 games this season - come to the City Ground in the Europa League.

A trip to Bournemouth finishes off the month and the narrative needs to have shifted by then.

There have been fine margins in several games under Postecoglou, injuries to Murillo and Ola Aina have not helped along with Chris Wood's Premier League dry spell, the striker has not scored in the top flight since the opening day.

It is understandable the shift in style and management from Nuno Espirito Santo is going to take time, especially without a pre-season, while summer signings are still adapting - now to their second manager.

Limited time on the training pitch due to the amount of games has not helped Postecoglou and for a manager who implements his style quickly that would have been useful.

Perhaps not even victories will be enough to win over those in the fanbase who have already turned but Postecoglou deserves a chance to put it right.

Postecoglou’s slow start

Tom McCoy

BBC Sport journalist

It is very harsh to judge a new manager on just seven games but nonetheless Nottingham Forest boss Ange Postecoglou faces immediate scrutiny after earning one point from a possible 12 so far in the Premier League.

His opening four fixtures have included difficult matches away to Arsenal and Newcastle but dropping points against newly promoted Burnley and Sunderland may have prompted concern within the Forest hierarchy.

While there is an obvious risk in reading too much into the statistics from such a small number of games, the underlying signs are not good at this early stage.

Since Postecoglou’s arrival, Forest have allowed more expected goals to their opponents than any other side. Their total number of errors leading to shots is the joint highest in this period, while only one team has faced more shots on target.

The Australian’s appointment was intended to breathe new life into Forest’s attack and his side have at least been shooting regularly, ranking fourth for most shots on target and seventh for all attempts since the start of September.

But too often they have been low-quality chances. Forest’s expected goals total under Postecoglou is the third lowest in the top flight, while their shot conversion rate of 3% is the league’s worst.

Forest fans share their thoughts

Forest fans have shared their views on the work of Ange Postecoglou. Thoughts?

Mike: I can see exactly what Ange Postecoglou is trying to do and the fanbase need to cut him some slack. I agree that results have not gone his way so far but he had a hard act to follow and in these crazy times he deserves some support. The real problem lies in the ownership and letting Nuno Espirito Santo go which could or maybe will prove catastrophic. Onwards and upwards. We will get better.

Matt: Some improvement but is it enough? I doubt it. Matz Sels brilliance aside it could have been three or four and then it would be a foregone conclusion. As nice a man as Ange comes across as, he's not for Forest and I think it's just a matter of time.

Graham: I keep refreshing the BBC site, hoping for the news we all want to come. Sadly it has not.

A more pragmatic Postecoglou

Newcastle 2-0 Nottingham Forest

Ciaran Kelly

BBC Sport reporter

Ange Postecoglou smiled as he greeted security staff and walked through the players' entrance after getting off the team bus before this game.

But, in truth, the Nottingham Forest manager has had little to be happy about of late after seeing his side concede 15 goals and fail to win any of his opening seven games in charge.

Having been subjected to taunts from a section of his own supporters on Thursday night, something had to change against Newcastle and it was rather telling that Postecoglou shook up his backline and handed captain Ryan Yates, Nicolo Savona and Jair Cunha their first Premier League starts of the season.

The Australian stressed the importance of staying switched on and making it difficult for Newcastle - and Nottingham Forest defended manfully before going behind.

Morato throwing his way in front of a shot from Nick Woltemade inside the box to prevent a certain goal at 0-0 epitomised that defend-at-all costs mentality.

But Forest never truly looked like getting back into this game once Bruno Guimaraes opened the scoring.

What else did Postecoglou say?

Newcastle 2-0 Nottingham Forest

It is not a surprise that Ange Postecoglou "expects" to have a discussion with owner Evangelos Marinakis and the Forest hierarchy about "what we have embarked on here, where we are at and what we are going to do".

"If people want to make an assessment after three and a half weeks, after we have had seven games, there's nothing I can do about that," he said.

"At the same time, there's nothing wrong with things being tough. I did have an option - I could have been sitting on the couch watching the game and not be in the middle of it.

"I'd much rather be here. I love a fight."
