Dominik Szoboszlai honestly admits mistake in his first Liverpool season

Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai has reflected on his first season at Anfield after admitting he may have "set the bar too high" in terms of the expectations for himself. The 23-year-old also revealed the main differences he has noticed between both England and Germany.

Szoboszlai was signed by Liverpool from RB Leipzig for around $75million (€70m/£60m) last summer and has since become a vital part of the squad that battled for the Carabao Cup, FA Cup, Europa League and Premier League this season. The midfielder has made 43 appearances across all competitions, scoring seven goals and adding three assists.

Despite competing across all competitions, Liverpool secured just one of the previously mentioned trophies. This was partly down to the injury problems that swept through the squad - and Szoboszlai was one of the players who suffered.

The former RB Leipzig man missed 12 games - one of which was the final of the Carabao Cup that Liverpool went on to win - due to a reoccurring hamstring problem. Reflecting on his first season in the top flight of English football, Szoboszlai revealed that he possibly set the bar 'too high' regarding what he wanted to accomplish.

“Perhaps I set the bar too high because I think there were certain matches where I couldn’t bring out the best in myself,” he said to MLSZ TV. “Or there are times when you don’t play well and in some people’s eyes you’re the worst player on the pitch, but it is not a problem because we get through these things together.”

The Hungarian international went on to speak about the differences between the Bundesliga and Premier League, where he added: “The [Premier League] is quicker, here you don’t have as much time to think as in the Bundesliga.

“Here you really need to know what you’d like to do with the ball before you receive it because if you don’t, you pretty much have no chance.”

Liverpool.com says: Despite his honesty, Szoboszlai has been an impressive signing by Liverpool and will be a mainstay in the midfield for years to come. He scored some important goals but sadly the injury hindered his campaign. Hopefully, next season will be better for everyone in terms of the trophy haul.
