Lee Grant opens up on Man Utd experience ahead of managerial bow, Red Devils loanee could ruin it

The new football season is almost upon us.

Manchester United fans must wait another two weeks for the Premier League campaign to begin, but the EFL season begins this week and will feature several loanees who recently left Old Trafford to continue their development at a senior level elsewhere.

Ruben Amorim has the difficult task of turning things around with United’s first-team after an abysmal 2024/25 season that saw the Red Devils lose the Europa League final before finishing 15th in the Premier League.

But it’s not only Amorim and United hoping for a bright start to the 2025/26 season. Former goalkeeper Lee Grant was appointed Huddersfield head coach this summer and will make his managerial bow tomorrow in their League One opener against Leyton Orient.

Grant became Kieran McKenna’s assistant manager at Ipswich Town after retiring from football and worked under an array of top managers during his time at United.

Now, Grant will try to use the experience he gained during that time as a manager.

What Lee Grant learned at Manchester United

Grant made just two appearances during his time at United, posing as a third-choice goalkeeper for most of that time.

That role is currently occupied by Tom Heaton, who is featuring on the pre-season tour due to Andre Onana’s injury and the likelihood of Altay Bayindir being sold this summer.

Grant doesn’t need to worry about the responsibilities of being a third-choice goalkeeper anymore because his focus is on leading Huddersfield Town.

Still, Grant can take a lot from what he experienced at Old Trafford on his new journey as a football manager, especially after playing under Jose Mourinho.

“It’s just gold dust, isn’t it?” Grant told The Independent about his four years at Old Trafford.

“I was in such a beautiful position. I feel guilty almost for saying it, but I could train really hard, do all the things that the club wanted me to do and lead and drive standards.

“Then I could take a step back and view things because I wasn’t being selected to play every week. David de Gea and Sergio Romero were ahead of me in the pecking order.

“I spent four years listening, learning, studying, watching very closely, speaking to people, understanding why this player would tick or why he wouldn’t tick, and being crude and just asking them, and enjoying getting that because you’re in the middle of it.

“At that point I’m very much in the mode of ‘I want to be a manager at some point’, so it was all with a view on this stuff is going to help me.”

We would like to wish Grant all the best with his job at Huddersfield Town.

Jack Moorhouse out to get Huddersfield Town

Earlier this week, United loanee Jack Moorhouse completed a move to Leyton Orient.

That means Moorhouse could make his debut for Leyton Orient against Lee Grant’s Huddersfield.

Moorhouse will be hoping for a dream debut, whereas Grant will demand the same outcome for his players as they start a new season.

It remains to be seen if Moorhouse will be thrown straight into the Leyton Orient side.
