Robbie Fowler reacts as former Liverpool star Adam Lallana announces his retirement, 'what a career'

Adam Lallana is something of a Liverpool legend following his time at the club.

On Wednesday morning, the 37-year-old announced his retirement from football after a long and illustrious career.

The attacking midfielder rarely put a foot wrong at Anfield, and even when he ended up being benched towards the tail-end of his time with the club, he never kicked up a fuss.

Lallana has spent the last few years of his career with Brighton and Southampton.

And although things didn’t quite end as he would have hoped with the Saints, there’s no denying that he hasn’t had a career to be proud of.

That is, especially since he managed to play in the Premier League right until the end of his career.

Over the next few years, many Premier League stalwarts such as Lallana will be calling it a day and hanging up their boots so that the next generation can come in and prove their worth.

Lallana had an impressive career that spanned almost 20 years and saw him make 569 appearances.

To announce his retirement from the beautiful game, the Englishman took to Instagram and shared a heartfelt message thanking all the clubs he’d played for.

This sparked reactions from numerous members of the football community, with Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler even writing a message to the midfielder.

“What a career,” he wrote. “Good luck with whatever’s next mate.”

James Milner is still hanging on at Brighton

With Lallana now retiring, many may have wondered what James Milner was up to and just before the summer transfer window opened, the former Liverpool man signed yet another contract extension with Brighton.

The midfielder left Liverpool in 2023 and has since been a part of Brighton’s first-team squad.

Lallana and Milner even got another season together at the Amex before Lallana chose to make the move back to Southampton for the final campaign of his career.

Milner is now just 16 games away from eclipsing Gareth Barry’s Premier League appearance total, which is a figure he should manage to achieve under Fabian Hurzeler this term.

The 2025-26 season will be the 24th Premier League campaign that Milner will have been a part of, which is an achievement in itself.

Of course, the 39-year-old is likely fitter than most players in the top flight, but the fact he’s still competing at the highest level is an impressive achievement in itself.

Only time will tell whether the 2025/26 season will be Milner’s last, but if it is, he, much like Lallana, will have had a career to be proud of.

And, who knows, we could even see Milner come back to Anfield in an off-pitch role in the future, due to the leadership Milner displayed throughout his time with Liverpool.
