(Image: Ryan Browne/Shutterstock)Ruben Amorim showed full emotion and delivered an honest statement following the defeat to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.Their humiliating League Cup exit at the hands of a League Two side leaves theFA Cup as their only realistic chance of silverware this season. United fell 2-0 behind to Grimsby at half-time at Blundell Park, rallied with two late goals to take the game to penalties, but ultimately lost 12-11 in a marathon shootout.Amorim said the players 'spoke really loud today about what they want,' implying they weren’t up for the challenge against the fourth-tier sideWith that in mind, MEN Sport has taken a look at everything the Reds head coach said after the defeat to Grimsby. How do you sum up your emotion: "In the end, for me, was worse than the beginning. It's not about the result, or in the penalties, I was not thinking about the penalties to go to the next stage, I was just... I think the way we play, the way we face competition in one moment everything is so important, I think the players spoke really loud about what they want today."Guys, it's really clear. I just want to apologise to our fans and we will have a game now, and we have time to think. Everything [was missing]. We need to be proud to go to the pitch and we know, that every draw in the Premier League it's going to be a huge problem. We came from one draw, we played quite well, both games in the Premier League."We know that people will get everything in our club and we come to the game with a fourth division team and we perform like that, I think again, the players clearly show what they want. It's hard to speak, I'm seven months talking about the environment or whatever."Are you shocked by what you've seen tonight? "And you are not? I'm shocked. I'm shocked because we are in the moment we make a lot of changes and we try to fight a lot of things, then we need to show up because if we don't, you can feel it that something has to change and you are not going to change 22 players again."What about Andre Onana? "It's not about the goalkeeper. With all due respect, against the fourth division we have to block everything with the opponent. Andre should touch the ball with his feet if we are in the high level. So again, I don't know what to say anymore to our fans. It's hard to face everything and that's it."Changing the formation: "It's not about changing the formation. We play against Arsenal, we play really well. We play against Liverpool, we play really well, we got to the Europa League final in the disaster season with the same system. The system is not important, we can play with four, five defenders, that doesn't matter. What matters is that we need to be different and that is the job of the coach and you can see that nothing changed."Didn't watch the penalty shootout: "The penalty shootout is not important, if I'm there trying to see if we win the game. The signs, the beginning of the game, during the game, that's what matters. If we win this game, it would have been so unfair for these guys, the opponent, so unfair. So today, the football was really fair so congratulations to them and we move to the next game and then we have time to decide things."Message to fans: "I just want to say sorry to our fans. I have nothing to say anymore about the performance when everything is so important in our club and you try to do everything, from pre-season, the Arsenal game - you lose it but you are improving, but then reach this kind of game, when everything is so important to our club and we start the game like this, I think my players are talking really loudly about what they want so I'm really sorry to our fans, I have nothing to say anymore."Sky Sports discounted Premier League and EFL package This article contains affiliate links, we will receive a commission on any sales we generate from it.
