Atletico Ottawa’s David Rodriguez opened up about his spectacular bicycle kick in an unforgettable CPL final. His stunning goal went viral, with many sports and soccer-related pages sharing the clip on social media. Rodriguez later scored again in extra time, sealing Ottawa’s 2-1 over Cavalry FC to capture the 2025 North Star Cup.

The final took place under challenging conditions. Snow covered the pitch, and heavy snow fell throughout the game. Both teams struggled to play their usual style. However, fans still enjoyed an exciting final filled with plenty of drama.

Rodriguez’s performance earned him the CPL Finals MVP award. During his post-match interview with OneSoccer‘s Kristian Jack, he spoke with pure emotion and excitement. The Ottawa forward said the bicycle kick came from instinct, not planning.

“I don’t think, I just do it,” Rodriguez said. “It just comes naturally.”

Rodriguez, 23, joined Ottawa on loan in February from Liga MX club Atletico San Luis, who share the same ownership group. Reflecting on the season, he admitted it was far from easy.

“I’m crying of happiness. It was a long season, especially for me,” he said. “Most people think it was easy for me, but it was not. And, I think this [North Star Cup win] shows what Atletico Ottawa is able to do.”

Fans will certainly remember the 2025 CPL final as a defining moment in Rodriguez’s career.

Atletico Ottawa Captain Nathan Ingham Praises David Rodriguez

Atletico Ottawa captain Nathan Ingham praised David Rodriguez after the match. The veteran goalkeeper has played in the Canadian Premier League since its inaugural season, and has witnessed the league grow more competitive.

Ingham said Rodriguez’s contributions reflected everything the club stands for. He admired the Mexican forward’s talent and ability to deliver when it mattered most.

“David [Rodriguez] scores the goal of the year,” Ingham told OneSoccer. “Without a doubt, the best final goal I’ve ever seen in my life when we needed him most. Man, what a player.”

Ottawa’s roster also includes experienced talent. Sam Salter, 25, set a league record for goals this season, while former Zaragoza midfielder Alberto Zapater brought leadership. For Zapater, 40, it marked the final game of his professional career.

Atletico Ottawa Midfielder Manuel Aparicio Reacts to CPL Final

Atletico Ottawa midfielder Manuel Aparicio also reflected after the thrilling CPL final. Like Ingham, Aparicio has played in the CPL since its first season. For Aparicio, this was his second league championship after winning his first with Pacific FC in 2021.

Aparicio praised Rodriguez for his brace and called the final one of the most chaotic games he had ever played.

“[Rodriguez has] had a great year. To top it off with those two goals. The bicycle kick and a chip from I don’t know how far. Amazing from him, amazing from the team. What a game this was. 90 minutes of chaos,” Aparicio told OneSoccer. “So many people still here with weather like this, honestly, it’s unbelievable.”

Despite the weather conditions, fans stayed until the final whistle. They cheered loudly for their team and waved supporter flags as snow continued to fall. Aparicio said their dedication and support showed how far Canadian soccer has come.

“Hopefully this keeps on bringing more and more people to Canadian football because it’s growing. It’s getting better.”
