Ireland set to face Thailand in ninth match

LAHORE: Ireland take on Thailand in the ninth match of the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier 2025, set to be played at the LCCA Cricket Ground in Lahore on Tuesday morning. Both teams will be looking to strengthen their campaigns in this competitive tournament.

The ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier is well underway in Pakistan, with teams battling for coveted spots in the World Cup later this year in India. Ireland, seen as one of the more promising sides, have had mixed fortunes so far. They defeated West Indies in their opening match but lost to hosts Pakistan due to a batting collapse. Thailand, ranked lower, are yet to showcase competitive form, having suffered a heavy defeat against Bangladesh where they were bowled out for just 93 runs.

Ireland enter this match as favorites, boasting a stronger squad overall. Their batting lineup is led by Orla Prendergast, who has been in remarkable form with 352 runs from 12 matches, including a century and a half-century. She will be pivotal in setting the tone for Ireland’s innings. Gaby Lewis provides stability at the top, while captain Laura Delany adds experience in the middle order.

On the bowling front, Arlene Kelly leads Ireland’s charge, having taken 13 wickets in 12 innings at an average of 29.30. Her consistency and ability to deliver breakthroughs make her a key player. Kelly will be supported by Jane Maguire and Karishma Ramharack, whose variations could prove effective against Thailand.

Orla Prendergast is one of their dependable top-order batter with all-round capabilities. They will also be relying on Arlene Kelly, who is Ireland’s most consistent bowler in recent matches. And Laura Delany is considered a seasoned campaigner to anchor the innings.

Thailand’s biggest challenge remains their batting. Nannapat Koncharoenkai showed promise with a 32-run knock against Bangladesh but will need support from other batters such as Natthakan Chantham and captain Naruemol Chaiwai. Openers Nattaya Boochatham and Chanida Sutthiruang must deliver a strong foundation, especially in the powerplay overs.

In bowling, Nattaya Boochatham showcased economy despite being wicketless in her last outing. Thipatcha Putthawong and Phannita Maya must provide timely breakthroughs to keep Ireland’s batting in check.
