Chelsea transfer news latest as Manchester City consider 'stunning hijack' of key Enzo Maresca summer target

Chelsea are still in the market for additions this summer, but Manchester City are reportedly considering joining the race for one of Enzo Maresca's targets.

Manchester City are said to have considered hijacking Chelsea target Xavi Simons ahead of a proposed move to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues will have ambitions of winning the 2025-26 Premier League, with the club set to take on Crystal Palace on Sunday in the first matchweek of the new season.

Head coach Enzo Maresca has once again been backed significantly having benefitted from almost £250m of expenditure this summer.

The Londoners boss was thought to be keen on adding RB Leipzig attacker Simons to his squad, though progress on a deal with the German side has been slow.

A fresh report from talkSPORT claims that while Chelsea have agreed personal terms with the player, their failure to come to an agreement with Leipzig could open the door for Manchester City to hijack the deal.

Should Simons join Manchester City and Pep Guardiola this summer transfer window?

Considering that Simons is only 22 years old, he will need consistent playing time if he is to fully realise his potential.

The Dutchman has predominantly played from the left in his career, and he could face fierce competition for a starting spot if he was to join Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola already has the likes of Omar Marmoush and Jeremy Doku in his ranks, and Simons may not be able to play as consistently in his favoured role.

The Leipzig man is also able to operate as a number 10, but he would have to displace Rayan Cherki from the starting XI, something that could be difficult given the French star is an incredible talent.

Would Simons get guaranteed Premier League minutes at Chelsea under Maresca?

With the World Cup set to be played after the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, minutes on the pitch will be crucial for Simons if he wishes to be in peak condition for the Netherlands.

Though Chelsea are well positioned to challenge for the title next term, the Leipzig attacker could struggle to cement himself as first choice.

Cole Palmer is certain to start for the Blues, and he will likely be stationed as a number 10, meaning Simons's only other natural position would be from the left of attack.

Chelsea have already signed Jamie Gittens this summer, and the 21-year-old will be pushing for minutes in order to battle for a place in the England squad for the World Cup, and he could take valuable minutes from Simons.
