Liverpool open their Champions League campaign by welcoming Atletico Madrid to Anfield tonight.

Arne Slot’s side remain perfect in the Premier League this term, sneaking a 1-0 win over Burnley at the death at Turf Moor last weekend.

They have not tasted defeat since their Commmunity Shield defeat by Crystal Palace at Wembley back in August.

As for Atleti, they have had a bit more of a stuttering start to the season, winning one of their opening four La Liga matches, drawing two and losing the other.

That said, Diego Simeone’s men beat Villarreal last time out, with Pablo Barrios and Nico Gonzalez both on the scoresheet.

Liverpool are gunning for a seventh European crown this year, having been knocked out in the last 16 by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain last term.

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid is scheduled for a 8pm BST kick-off today, Tuesday September 16, 2025.

The match will take place at Anfield in Liverpool.

As for Atleti, Simeone has four injury concerns ahead of his trip to Merseyside.

Julian Alvarez, the former Man City striker, was forced off at the weekend with a knee injury, and the same can be said of David Hancko and Robin Le Normand, who both came off with ankle and back problems respectively. Goalscorer Gonzalez was also withdrawn with cramp.

The Spaniards had already been without centre-back Jose Maria Gimenez, midfielder Thiago Almada and winger Alex Baena.

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid prediction

Off form alone, this should be a routine Liverpool victory, but Atletico are always a tricky customer in the Champions League.

The last two times these teams met, the La Liga outfit had a man sent off, with Felipe dismissed in a 2-0 defeat at Anfield back in November 2021, before Antoine Griezmann saw red in the reverse group stage fixture at the Estadio Metropolitano, where Liverpool emerged 3-2 victors.

They were frustrated against Burnley at the weekend, but eventually found a way to win, and this should be another difficult encounter for them, but one that they should take maximum points from.
