Ten years without Zoco

1
On 28 September 2015, Real Madrid said goodbye to Ignacio Zoco, a key figure in our club's history. He played in 434 official matches for Real Madrid and won one European Cup, seven League titles and two Copa del Rey trophies. With the national team, he won the 1964 European Championship against the USSR. This was the national team's greatest success in the 20th century.

Zoco was one of those fine young players who gave Real Madrid a new lease of life in the 1960s, when the careers of legends such as Di Stéfano and Puskas were coming to an end. The high point of his career came with the conquest of the sixth European Cup by the so-called Real Madrid yeyé, captained by Gento and in which Zoco played a prominent role. He also earned the admiration of the crowd for his loyalty, honesty and dedication.

Retirement

His farewell to active football was unbeatable. It came in the final match of the 1973-74 season, the Copa del Rey final. Real Madrid defeated Barcelona (4-0) and Zoco lifted the championship trophy thanks to captain Ramón Grosso’s gentlemanly gesture, who offered him his place. A fitting end to an extraordinary career.
