Nebraska Cornhuskers To Wear All Red Combo on Saturday

After teasing all-red uniforms for most of the week, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have made it official: they will be going full-red tomorrow in their game against Houston Christian. The Huskers will wear their standard white helmets atop the red jerseys, pant and socks.

Naturally, this was announced via video.

The look is apparently nicknamed “Red Dawn.”

While this is a new combination, the Huskers are simply combining their existing uniform elements to create the all-red look.

Nebraska is still a fairly traditional program when it comes to uniforms. They mostly wear white/red/white at home, and white/white/red on the road. This will be the first time since 1986 that the Cornhuskers have worn their regular red jerseys and pants together. The previous matchup was against Oklahoma.

The new all-red uniform will look a lot like the above, showing how little the Nebraska football uniform has changed over the decades.

Here are a couple additional looks (screen grabs from the hype video):

So why the all-red switch up? Apparently it’s a favorite look shown to recruits, who have posed in the combination during campus visits. So now it will once again see the field.

This won’t be the only alternate look sported by the Huskers this season. On November 25, the team will wear an all black version of the Husker uniform, complete with white helmets with a black “N” logo and stripe. The facemask on those will also be black.

As noted above, this will be the first time since 1986 the Cornhuskers will create an all-red uniform using their standard kits. In between, the wore all red special uniforms, one with a red helmet and a second time in a different all red alternate with a black helmet.

I like Nebraska’s regular uniform combos, but I’m definitely not a fan of the all-red. While not identical, it looks a lot like the Arizona Cardinals’ “Bloodclot” uniform that is rightfully panned by most folks with vision. It’s not necessarily that the all-red below the neck is so bad, but the fact that mono-dark paired with a white helmet is generally a terrible visual. I’ll need to see them on the field before I completely pan the look, but I’m not hopeful.

But if it’s for one game only, and the fans and players like it, that’s fine. It’s not like Nebraska is in danger of becoming Oregon. And while nothing is guaranteed, the game is probably a lock for Nebraska, since Houston Christian is an FCS school. When FBS teams play FCS schools, Vegas books don’t post point spreads until almost gametime, but suffice it to say Nebraska will likely be 40+ point favorites.

What do you think of the combo? Should traditional uni schools like Nebraska stick to one home and one road look, or should they be changing things up a bit, as Nebraska is doing this season?
