BCCI to be covered in National Sports Governance Bill

The BCCI will be covered under the National Sports Governance Bill. It was tabled by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and will be introduced in the Parliament on Wednesday. The development was reported by PTI citing a sports ministry source. “Like all National federations, the BCCI will have to comply with the law of the land once this bill becomes an act,” the source was quoted as saying by the news agency.

"They will remain an autonomous body like all other NSFs but their disputes, if any, will also come to the proposed National Sports Tribunal which will become the dispute resolution body for sports matter ranging from elections to selection," the source added.

The BCCI is world's richest cricket body and doesn't depend on government grants. However, with Indian cricket teams all set to be a part of the Olympic roster at Los Angeles in 2028, the BCCI will adhere to the new Sports Bill.

In fact, until 2019 the cricket body was not recognised as a National Sports Federation (NSF). However, now with BCCI falling under the bill's ambit it will automatically be deemed as an NSF, which puts it under the purview of all Sports Ministry rules and guidelines.

This also is an interesting development as far as the next BCCI presidential candidate is concerned. The bill carries a provision of increasing the upper limit of an age cap to 75 from the existing 70 for an administrator. This means Roger Binny, current BCCI president, who turned 70 last Saturday can continue his role for at least three years if not five.
