Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott believes Ruben Amorim will have departed Manchester United before Christmas arrives.

The Red Devils kicked off the new campaign with promise, despite suffering a 1-0 defeat by Arsenal. This loss showed character, and bolstered by new signings Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, the future appeared encouraging.

A 1-1 stalemate with Fulham quickly dampened such optimism, while a Carabao Cup elimination by League Two outfit Grimsby Town marked a fresh nadir. A dramatic 3-2 triumph over Burnley ensued, though the victory lacked conviction, with an injury to newcomer Cunha serving as another blemish on a season still in its early stages.

The penalty shootout defeat to a lower-league opponent sparked demands for the manager's dismissal. While such calls have slightly subsided, Lescott remains convinced that United will have appointed a new boss by January.

Following the international interval, a challenging visit to the Etihad to face rivals City awaits Amorim. Pep Guardiola's team have also endured a stuttering start to the campaign, with Lescott maintaining both managers face mounting scrutiny, reports the Mirror.

"The pressure is on for both managers [Amorim and Guardiola]," declared Lescott on In The Mixer, brought to you by Sky Bet. "Different types of pressure, though.

"Pep's job isn't under threat, but Amorim's is, yeah," continued Lescott. "I'd be very surprised if he (Amorim) is still there by Christmas. If he is there in January 2026, they're just being stubborn. He looks lost."

Lescott, who played at the Etihad between 2009 and 2014 and made 160 appearances, additionally believes that Amorim's Manchester rival, Guardiola, has seen his City departure telegraphed through fresh signings.

When questioned whether City are planning for existence beyond Guardiola, Lescott replied: "Yeah, maybe. You're going to have to. The standards may be different this season because it's a new era, you know.

"When you've got seasoned players who have been there for an extended period, they are the ones who guide you through difficult times. Whilst now, there's [Tijjani] Reijnders, [Rayan] Cherki. They're all experiencing negativity together for the first time. So who is going to get them out of it?

"I think, like prior to Pep, a lot of this summer's signings are post-Pep. Just like when they signed Kevin [De Bruyne], Delphy [Fabian Delph], Raheem [Sterling], they all signed before Pep arrived, but they were for Pep."

Guardiola, who extended his tenure at Manchester City last year with a contract set to expire in 2027, told ESPN: "After my contract with City, I'm going to stop. I'm sure. I don't know if I'm going to retire, but I'm going to take a break. How I want to be remembered, I don't know.

"All coaches want to win so we can have a memorable job, but I believe that the fans of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and City had fun watching my teams play. I don't think we should ever live thinking about whether we're going to be remembered."
