Leeds Close to Completing Signing of German International, Official on July 1st

Leeds United are "close to completing" their first signing of the summer by signing Lukas Nmecha as a free agent, according to Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Daniel Farke guided Leeds back to the Premier League in his second season at the club and is making preparations for the upcoming campaign, as the Whites hope to buck the recent trend of promoted teams being condemned to an immediate relegation.

Leeds are preparing for a Premier League return after a two-year absence and have been linked with a number of potential moves, but now seem set to make their first addition.

Leeds Will Sign Nmecha for Farke

Striker will arrive for free

Graham Smyth has reported that Lukas Nmecha will be Leeds’ first summer signing. Nmecha, who joined Wolfsburg in 2021, is out of contract with the club and as such, will join the Whites on a free transfer. Farke has seen first-hand what Nmecha is capable of, having managed Borussia Mönchengladbach while the forward played for Wolfsburg.

It was obvious that United would have to make additions to better their survival hopes, but Nmecha adds depth to an area that needs it for Leeds. Joel Piroe, who won the Championship Golden Boot, deserves a chance in the Premier League, but the Dutchman is inexperienced in the English top flight.

Patrick Bamford, meanwhile, has struggled for fitness in recent seasons while Mateo Joseph, a promising young talent, may need a loan away from the club to gain more minutes for development.

Nmecha is no stranger to English football. The German international grew up in England, progressing through the youth academy at Manchester City and spending time on loan with Preston and Middlesbrough before departing the Sky Blues in 2021.

The striker scored just three goals last season, though it is worth considering that he played under 500 minutes of Bundesliga football, with a hamstring injury keeping him out of action until November. Should Nmecha get back to his best form at Elland Road then, on a free transfer, he could prove to be an especially shrewd bit of business for the Whites.
