Donald Trump hints at bringing in new US law after gatecrashing Chelsea's Club World Cup trophy lift

American President Donald Trump has suggested he could bring in a controversial law after taking part in Chelsea's Club World Cup trophy lift.

Despite entering into the match as heavy underdogs, Chelsea pulled off a huge 3-0 upset win over Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the Club World Cup in the MetLife Stadium, New Jersey.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer led the line for his club, scoring two goals and assisting the third, earning himself the title of Superior Player of the Match.

As Palmer and his Chelsea teammates gathered to the lift the Club World Cup trophy, they were joined by US President Trump, who stayed throughout most of the celebrations.

And now, it has been revealed that Trump has suggested that he would be prepared to introduce a controversial piece of legislation that could change how the sport is viewed in America forever.

Given the popularity of the NFL and another American Football organisations across the country, Americans watching competitions like the Premier League and the Club World Cup will often refer to the sport as 'soccer'.

But as he spoke about America hosting the major competition of the summer, Trump suggested that he could introduce a new law recognising football as the official name of the beautiful game.

Speaking to DAZN, Trump said: "Gianni [Infantino] is a friend of mine, he's done such a great job with the league and with soccer - or as they would call it 'football', but I guess we call it soccer. I'm not sure that change could be made very easily.

"But it's great to watch - and this is a little bit of an upset that we're watching today, isn't it?"

However, after admitting it could be difficult to change the America public's decision to refer to the sport as 'soccer', interviewer Emily Austin suggested that he introduced an executive order so that the sport was referred to as football from now on.

Smiling, the American President replied: "I think we could do that. I think I could do that."

What have Chelsea players said about Trump joining in on their trophy lift?

Speaking after the match, Chelsea captain Reece James, who was seen asking Trump if he was going to stay on stage during the trophy lift, explained his surprise that the US President decided to stand beside him during the celebration.

James said: "They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage, and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay.

"He just congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment."

Meanwhile star player Palmer admitted that he was also confused to see Trump involved in the trophy lift, saying: "I knew he was going to be here but I didn't know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy.

"I was a bit confused, yes."
