Ange Postecoglou appointed Nottingham Forest head coach after Nuno’s sacking

Ange Postecoglou has been confirmed as Nottingham Forest’s head coach, taking over from Nuno Espírito Santo. The Australian is back in work three months after he was dismissed by Tottenham and his contract is understood to run until 2027.

With his appointment Postecoglou has the opportunity to aim once more at winning the Europa League, having secured the trophy with Spurs in May before he was sacked 16 days later. Forest are in the competition after Uefa denied Crystal Palace entry.

Postecoglou, born in Greece, has a personal relationship with Forest’s Greek owner, Evangelos Marinakis, whose breakdown in relations with Nuno led to the Portuguese’s departure. Marinakis has previously spoken of his admiration for Postecoglou.

Marinakis said on Tuesday of Postecoglou’s appointment: “We are bringing a coach to the club who has a proven and consistent record of winning trophies. His experience of coaching teams at the highest level, along with his desire to build something special with us at Forest, makes him a fantastic person to help us on our journey and achieve consistently all our ambitions.

“After gaining promotion to the Premier League, then building consistently season after season to secure European football, we now must take the right step to compete with the very best and challenge for trophies. Ange has the credentials and the track record to do this, and we are excited he is joining us on our ambitious journey.”

Postecoglou begins with a game at Arsenal on Saturday and a reunion with Spurs comes at the City Ground in mid-December. Spurs sacked him after they finished 17th in the Premier League, losing 22 games. Nuno led Forest to seventh and for much of the season it appeared they would qualify for the Champions League.

Postecoglou’s traditionally adventurous playing style contrasts with the more pragmatic counterattacking approach generally favoured by Nuno at Forest, although Postecoglou adjusted his tactics to help deliver the Europa League. With the transfer window shut, no signings will be possible before January.

Forest said when announcing Nuno’s departure at 12.15am BST on Tuesday: “The club thanks Nuno for his contribution during a very successful era at the City Ground, in particular his role in the 2024-25 season, which will forever be remembered fondly in the history of the club. As someone who played a pivotal role in our success last season, he will always hold a special place in our journey.”
