Manager calls out Man Utd loanee after shootout disaster, ‘Good luck taking a penalty at Old Trafford…’

Manchester United have been terrible at loaning players out over the last few years and that may be continuing this season.

Last season was a real low for Manchester United in the loan market, with several talents sent to destinations with little to no football being given to them.

Ethan Wheatley disappeared at Walsall, while Ethan Ennis and Dan Gore also struggled despite solid signs.

There was hope this would change, with Jonny Evans taking up a loan manager role, and some United talents heading to clubs where they could have success.

But one player has already suffered a blow and his manager was quick to mock the young midfielder.

Dan Gore slammed by his loan manager after penalty shootout miss

For Dan Gore, this season is absolutely pivotal for his future having had consecutive loans fail in between serious long term injuries.

Last season, Gore went to Rotherham for the second half of the campaign, where he had an excellent start. However, after one game, Gore was out with a foot injury, which derailed his campaign.

Gore admitted that he loved the beginning of his Rotherham loan and as a result, he has ended up back at the League One side this season for hopefully a full campaign of senior football. However, after playing in Rotherham’s penalty shoot-out loss to Salford, missing a penalty, Gore has been mocked publicly by his manager, Matt Hamshaw, as quoted by Manchester World’s Rich Fay.

“I’ve just said to Dan Gore: ‘Good luck taking a penalty at Old Trafford when you can’t score one at Salford!'”

This isn’t going to fill Gore with confidence, nor does it reflect well on the manager to mock a young player after a debut blunder.

Rotherham’s previous manager also mocked Dan Gore last season

Having a difficult manager on loan is not a new experience for Gore, having spent the second half of the 2024/25 campaign under Steve Evans at Rotherham.

During this loan, Evans questioned Gore’s injury, suggesting it was the strangest thing in the world.

Following this, Evans admitted he was frustrated as an explanation for his comments on Gore, backtracking quickly to praise the midfielder instead.

Evans called Gore’s injury situation ‘total madness’ and all along discussed his desire to get the talented player back at Rotherham.

However, despite this, Evans was sacked by Rotherham, however it seems Gore faces similar issues under this current manager.
