RANGERS Football Club are today delighted to announce the signing of Joe Rothwell from AFC Bournemouth on a three-year deal. The midfielder, 30, becomes the latest addition to Russell Martin’s side as the Gers Head Coach continues to re-shape his squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.Rothwell’s footballing journey began in the youth ranks of Manchester United where he progressed through the system and to the fringes of the first-team after joining the club aged six.The midfielder departed on successive loans to Blackpool and Barnsley where he amassed his first appearances in senior football.A permanent move to Oxford United in 2016 materialised as the Englishman made over 50 appearances in two years for the side. His impressive performances caught the eye of Blackburn Rovers, fresh off promotion back to the English Championship, where he immediately became an important member of Tony Mowbray’s side.Indeed, Rothwell made over 150 appearances for the Ewood Park outfit in a four-year spell, enjoying a particularly impressive 2021/22 campaign where he registered 14 goal contributions. The Cherries, themselves having gained promotion back to the Premier League, moved swiftly to secure his services in the summer of 2022, with the midfielder making over 30 appearances for the south coast side.Rothwell then linked up with Russell Martin in the first half of 2024 as he helped Southampton achieve promotion back to the Premier League, repeating the feat the following campaign with Leeds United in a memorable season-long loan with the Yorkshire club.Speaking after signing for Rangers, Rothwell commented: "I am delighted to have the deal done and be here. It is brilliant. The size of the club speaks for itself and as soon as the interest was there it was an immediate yes from me.“With Russell coming in too it made that decision a little bit easier because working with him in the past and I know what type of guy he is and how he wants to do things. That was an even bigger pull for me, but the club speaks for itself.”Head Coach, Russell Martin, continued: “He is a player who we thoroughly enjoyed working with during my time at Southampton."His leadership, professionalism and quality were a huge asset. He is joining on the back of two promotions so helps bring a real winning mentality to the group."We are excited for Joe to join up the squad, get to know his teammates, and help make the group stronger.”Sporting Director, Kevin Thelwell, added: “We are thrilled to secure Joe’s services as we continue to strengthen the squad this summer.“He has a wealth of experience in the game having performed strongly over a number of years at various levels in England.“We believe he has the right temperament and quality as a player to be a strong addition to the squad and look forward to seeing his impact.”
