Arne Slot must end right-back experiment after what Dominik Szoboszlai did for Hungary

Dominik Szoboszlai has become one of Arne Slot’s most important players at Liverpool this season.

The 24-year-old disappointed overall during his maiden campaign at Anfield despite hitting the ground running following his £60 million arrival from RB Leipzig.

However, Szoboszlai has been phenomenal for Liverpool thus far and has been one of the few standout performers as the defending league champions have struggled to get going this season.

He, of course, played a pivotal role in Slot’s title success last year, featuring prominently in central midfield and really kicked on in the second half of the season, ending with eight goals and nine assists across all competitions.

Despite recording his most productive campaign in a red shirt, Szoboszlai has been criticised for his involvement at Anfield. He can now be comfortably considered one of the best performers, and Slot must utilise him in his preferred position.

Dominik Szoboszlai must return to midfield for Liverpool

Szoboszlai single-handedly rescued a crucial point in World Cup qualifying as his 91st-minute equaliser secured a 2-2 draw against Portugal.

He assisted Attila Szalai for the opener at the Estadio Jose Alvalade on Tuesday evening before Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace overturned the deficit.

His Liverpool teammate, Milos Kerkez, was slammed by Hungarian media for his performance on the night, whilst Szoboszlai proved his worth once again on the international stage.

Hungary boss Marco Rossi claimed Szoboszlai can be one of the best midfield players in world football, and now it is time for him to play a more extended role in his preferred position.

Indeed, Szoboszlai has impressed as a makeshift right-back this term, but with Florian Wirtz yet to show the form displayed in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen, it is time to give the German a much-needed respite.

Even Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister have struggled recently; a return to the Premier League title-winning midfield could help Liverpool restore clarity at Anfield.

Arne Slot needs one of Conor Bradley or Jeremie Frimpong to step up

Thus far, neither Conor Bradley nor Jeremie Frimpong has been able to lay down a significant marker to be the undisputed option at right-back.

While no Liverpool supporter is expecting the pair to fill the void left by Trent Alexander-Arnold, right-back is becoming a problem position.

Against Chelsea, Enzo Maresca exploited the space on the right flank to launch his attacks, and Estevao’s 95th-minute match-winner came from a Marc Cucurella cross from that side.

It is imperative that the Reds return to winning ways when Manchester United travel to Anfield on Sunday. If Szoboszlai is to return to his preferred midfield role, Slot will be left with a monumental decision regarding who will start at right-back.
