Alan Shearer shares "worrying" thing he spotted about West Ham in Sunderland loss

Graham Potter is already ringing alarm bells in East London after his side suffered a 3-0 loss against newly-promoted Sunderland.

West Ham United put up little fight at the Stadium of Light and were comfortably beaten in the end as three second-half goals courtesy of Eliezer Mayenda, Daniel Ballard, and Wilson Isidor settled the contest.

The Hammers are relegation candidates this season, and it will be difficult for Graham Potter to disagree as things stand, particularly given how his side were so easily dispatched by last season’s Championship playoff winners.

However, Alan Shearer believes he has noticed something about the Irons that will be a severe concern to the supporters after he slammed their performance on Saturday.

Alan Shearer slams ‘no spark’ from West Ham vs Sunderland

When analysing the match for BBC One’s Match of the Day, Shearer believes the players’ reaction, or lack thereof, left a lot to be desired.

“Yeah, I would be (concerned). That’s Graham Potter’s biggest defeat as West Ham manager. They haven’t replaced Kudus, two new players (are) in the starting lineup.

“Callum Wilson came on, but Bowen was their main threat, particularly in the first half. But the second half would be the one to worry about because, once they conceded that first goal, they folded like a pack of cards.

“There was no spark, no energy, and there was certainly no reaction at all, and that would be the worrying thing already.”

Indeed, Tottenham agreed a £55 million fee for Mohammed Kudus earlier this summer and despite receiving a healthy fee for his services, the Irons have yet to reinvest the funds into the squad.

West Ham fans are happy Kudus is gone, but the Ghanaian international was an active threat last season and his presence on the pitch could have made a significant difference at the Stadium of Light.

TBR Football exclusively reported in June that the Hammers needed to sell Kudus to fund Potter’s plans in the transfer market but barring Callum Wilson’s arrival as a free agent, no money has been allocated to bolstering the offensive line.

West Ham will try to recruit before the transfer deadline

As revealed by TBR Football, West Ham are interested in Aleix Garcia, and he is a priority target at the London Stadium after a move for Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott was deemed too costly.

Furthermore, Jacob Ramsey did not want to join the Irons and will soon complete a £50 million move to Newcastle United.

There is just over a fortnight left until the transfer window slams shut on 1 September, leaving the Hammers a race against time to bolster the squad.

Jarrod Bowen is the main threat, but as Shearer pointed out, he cannot be relied on as heavily as he was last season for another campaign – the 28-year-old needs help.

Whether West Ham can provide Potter and Bowen with a new creative outlet remains to be seen, but if the result at the Stadium of Light is anything to go by, they will struggle this season without key additions.
