BYU football: Cougars stuck in weather delay at Arizona

For the first time since 2022, BYU football is in a weather delay.

The Cougars’ matchup with Arizona was halted at about 5:50 p.m. local time Saturday due to lightning within eight miles of the stadium.

The second quarter was just about to begin at the time of the delay, with BYU leading 14-7.

Heavy rain had been forecasted prior to the matchup due to tropical storm Priscilla in the southwest United States. Such precipitation began during the delay, according to Deseret News reporter Jay Drew.

At 6:25 p.m. local time, Arizona athletics posted to X that the delay would continue due to more lightning in the area.

Fans at the game were directed to the concourse and given the option to either remain there or exit the venue, sit in their vehicles and reenter once the delay ends.

At 6:48 p.m. local time, Arizona posted to X that fans were welcome to return to their seats.

At 6:52 p.m. local time, Drew posted that the game would resume “in about 15 minutes,” unless further lightning appeared.

Drew also shared that due to the time of the delay, tonight’s halftime will be 12 minutes compared to the usual 20.

At 6:56 p.m. local time, BYU and Arizona players came back on the field, according to a post on X from Mitch Harper of KSL Sports.
