Abdul Carter injury update: Terrible news emerges on Penn State star pass-rusher

Penn State star pass-rusher Abdul Carter exited the Fiesta Bowl against Boise State in the second quarter, seemingly nursing an injury.

He was spotted coming out for the second half with his left arm heavily wrapped. And on Boise State’s first series of the second half — a touchdown drive to bring the contest to within one score — Carter was conspicuously absent.

ESPN’s broadcast crew has not provided an update on his status other than to note that he has been off the field.

“Abdul Carter still on the sideline for the Penn State defense,” broadcaster Bob Wischusen said. “Just spoke with (sideline reporter) Tom Luginbill and no official word as to what his status is for the rest of the game, but he’s certainly not showing any signs that he’s going to be getting back in there any time soon.”

Abdul Carter’s absence has been notable.

Carter had not logged any statistics in the game, but he had been in the backfield several times and had hurried up the Boise State operation in the early going. He was expected to be a key factor in the contest, so any further updates on his status will be noteworthy.

For now, though, it looks like Penn State will be without him.

Just how big an impact has Abdul Carter had this season for the Nittany Lions?

Well, he has logged 63 tackles, 21.5 tackles for a loss, 11.0 sacks, two forced fumbles, three pass breakups and three passes defended. He’s been an absolute monster and is widely viewed as an early first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, should he choose to enter.

That’s a considerable piece to be missing in a vital College Football Playoff matchup.

Boise State had scored early in the second half to cut Penn State’s lead to 17-14. There was 11:08 remaining in the third quarter at the time of this writing.
