Paul Merson and Chris Sutton agree on result prediction for Chelsea vs West Ham in the Premier League

Paul Merson and Chris Sutton have both predicted the same result for Chelsea’s upcoming Premier League fixture against West Ham on Monday night.

Chelsea are currently on a tough run of one victory in their last seven Premier League matches, so they desperately need a positive result versus West Ham.

In the Blues’ last match, they suffered a really poor 3-1 away defeat at Manchester City.

Chelsea now face a huge challenge to finish in the Premier League’s top four after their loss at the Etihad Stadium. Hopefully, Enzo Maresca’s side can respond in style in a fiery London derby.

Paul Merson and Chirs Sutton make Chelsea vs West Ham predictions

Paul Merson believes the Blues will have too much for 14th-placed West Ham in Monday’s showdown under the lights at Stamford Bridge.

Merson told Sportskeeda: “This is a golden opportunity for Chelsea to improve their chances of finishing in the top four though. If West Ham start the first 20 minutes of this game like how they did against Aston Villa last weekend, Chelsea will put them to the sword in no time. But if West Ham can settle down quickly, they have enough individual quality in their ranks to hurt the hosts at Stamford Bridge.

“Bit of history in this fixture. Both teams’ fans don’t like each other and Graham Potter returning to the club where he spent just seven months in charge makes this an interesting watch on Monday night!

“Prediction: Chelsea 3-1 West Ham United.”

Meanwhile, Chris Sutton agrees that Chelsea will get a winning result over London rivals West Ham in a few days time, tipping a 2-1 home victory.

“Former Chelsea manager Graham Potter is back at the Bridge but I don’t see it being a happy return for him,” Sutton told BBC Sport.

“Chelsea need a new goalkeeper and probably another centre-forward too if they are going to push on but even with what they have, I still think they will be too strong for West Ham.

“Sutton’s prediction: 2-1.”

Chelsea can’t lose further ground on the top four

Chelsea will face an anxious wait until their game on Monday night while the rest of their Premier League rivals play over the weekend.

The Blues looked like a shoe-in for the top four positions around a month ago, but they’re now in an extremely tough fight with several impressive sides to qualify for the Champions League spots. Incidentally, there’s a good chance that fifth spot will also turn out to be enough for Champions League qualification as well.

Moises Caicedo said Chelsea’s season target is Champions League qualification, so the pressure is on the very young squad to get back on track. If not, they’ll quickly be left behind by teams in much better form than them right now.

This is currently the second consecutive season at Chelsea without Champions League football, and it should be unthinkable to let that reach a third straight year.
