Roy Hodgson reveals his Liverpool regret over Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher

Roy Hodgson endured a disastrous spell at Liverpool in the 2010/11 campaign, with his tenure lasting just over six months.

The former Fulham boss took over the reins from Rafa Benitez at the end of the 2009/10 season, where he guided the Cottagers to the Europa League final.

Hodgson took the job at Anfield during a tumultuous time for the Reds – Fenway Sports Group purchased Liverpool in October 2010 from the infamous Tom Hicks and George Gillett, who brought the club to the brink of administration.

John Henry has proven his acumen as Liverpool owner over the years, and his first executive decision came when he sacked Hodgson in January and replaced him with Sir Kenny Dalglish.

Dalglish would win the League Cup and reach the FA Cup final that year. While Hodgson’s tenure is a painful memory for Liverpool fans, he has revealed what he wishes he had done differently at Anfield.

Hodgson wishes he leaned more on Gerrard and Carragher

In an interview with Gary Lineker on The Rest Is Football podcast, Hodgson admitted that he should have leaned more on the wisdom of his two most influential Liverpool stars at Anfield.

“I think probably it would have been sensible to try and get, I mean, I always thought that Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard were on board with what we were trying to do. There’s no problem with that, but I might have tried to get more out of them. Look, how’s it been, you know, what have you not liked? You know, what do you think needs to be changed here?

“And we even get their ideas, something about some of the players on that as well, you know. But I did it very much like the old fashioned manager, head coach. My responsibility. I’ve got to do it. I think I’d have done that. I don’t know. You’ve got to coach the team. We’ve had to coach the team.

“We’d have had to try and get the team playing in the right way. I wouldn’t have turned the job down because of fear. I’d have gone in and failed. That’s the way it is.”

Hodgson is regarded as one of the most underrated managers in English football. Although his spell at Anfield did not go according to plan, the Englishman carved out a respectable career in management.

However, the ex-England boss certainly did not help matters on Merseyside. Paul Konchesky and Christian Poulsen were notable signings who failed to make the mark for the Reds, while Hodgson attempted to sign Bobby Zamora from Fulham.

Gerrard and Carragher notoriously set the benchmark at Liverpool; their opinions on the squad held the most weight across their long Anfield careers, and as Hodgson claimed, the Scousers could have steered the ex-boss in the right direction.

How does Roy Hodgson compare to other Liverpool managers?

It will come as no surprise to the supporters that Hodgson boasts the worst record across the last five Liverpool managers.

Of course, Sir Kenny Dalglish had a hugely successful first stint as the Reds’ boss, winning three league titles, and he managed to deliver further silverware on his second attempt.

Hodgson only managed 13 wins on Merseyside, with a particular low blow coming at the hands of Northampton, who knocked the Reds out of the League Cup at Anfield.

Liverpool have come a long way since Hodgson’s tenure, both on and off the pitch, as Arne Slot aims to deliver a second consecutive Premier League title this season.
