The 2025 NFL Draft saw Cam Ward selected first overall by the Tennessee Titans, marking a dramatic shift in the race for the top pick.

While Ward's rise was anticipated, Shedeur Sanders, the initial favourite, was left out of the first round altogether.

The Tennessee Titans selected quarterback Cam Ward with the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, which took place in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Ward, who led Miami to a 10-3 record last season, was the clear favourite for the prestigious honour after an outstanding season. He claimed the most touchdown passes in college football, with 39, and posted 4,313 passing yards, the second-most in the nation.

While Colorado’s Travis Hunter won the 2024 Heisman Trophy, the Titans were in need of a franchise quarterback.

The Jaguars, however, made a surprise move by trading with the Cleveland Browns to secure the second pick, where they selected Hunter, the first two-way star in the draft in nearly three decades.

But the biggest shock came when Shedeur Sanders, Hunter’s college quarterback, was overlooked entirely in the first round.

Once projected as a top pick, Sanders’ draft stock plummeted, leaving him waiting in uncertainty. The New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers both opted for other positions, while Sanders, who had been invited to the draft, watched from Texas as his family hoped for a call that never came.
