Denmark legend gives scathing assessment of Christian Eriksen’s latest move, ‘it is incomprehensible…’

Christian Eriksen is still without a club after leaving Manchester United at the end of his contract.

After spending three years at Manchester United, making 107 appearances, Christian Eriksen left Old Trafford as a free agent.

Eriksen was among a trio of United players whose contracts expired after a turbulent campaign that saw Ruben Amorim’s side finish 15th in the Premier League.

Championship outfit Wrexham made an approach to sign Eriksen, but nothing materialised and the new season has begun with the 33-year-old still without a club.

There are serious concerns about the experienced midfielder’s future, after Eriksen was left out of the Denmark squad for the September internationals.

Now, there are doubts over whether he will be playing in the World Cup next summer.

Thomas Gravesen slams latest Christian Eriksen decision

Denmark legend Thomas Gravesen expressed concern over Eriksen’s ‘unfortunate situation’ in the summer, but fears have become reality with the midfielder overlooked in the latest Denmark squad.

Perhaps it’s a hint from Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand that he will now look to the future, with Eriksen in the latter stages of his career and struggling to find a new club.

Eriksen still has time on his hands to choose his next destination despite the European transfer window shutting last Monday.

This week, Eriksen was pictured training with Swedish outfit Malmö as he attempts to work on his fitness ahead of a potential move.

However, the decision to train with Malmö has been heavily criticised by former Denmark international Gravesen.

The former Everton and Real Madrid midfielder believes Eriksen is showing a lack of ambition.

“It is incomprehensible to me that he chooses Malmö,” Gravesen told Fotboll Skanalen.

“It is not a club that he can go to because he cannot sign a contract with them and we have some clubs in Denmark that are much, much better than Malmö.

“This looks like a friendly thing, where Christian Eriksen is over and having fun with some friends. Where is the ambition to play football?

“We talk about him being without a club for three months, but he has been without a club since January because he has been able to sign a contract with a new club ever since. He has been dragging his feet on it for a long time. If he wants to play for the national team, what signal does this send?

“What signal does going up and having fun with friends in Malmö send? I don’t understand it! It seems frivolous in some way. If he had ambitions, he would have gone to a higher-level club. For me, it is not ambitious enough to go to Malmö and have fun. Who sees him there?”

Which Man Utd players played for Malmö?

Eriksen wouldn’t be the only former United player to spend time at Malmö if he were to join the Swedish club.

Former United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic came through Malmö’s academy before joining Ajax in 2001.

Furthermore, Anthony Elanga had a short spell at Malmö before joining United’s academy in 2015. The winger is currently playing for Newcastle following a summer transfer from Nottingham Forest.

Only time will tell if Eriksen will commit his future to Malmö.
