Ruben Amorim's side were beaten 12-11 on penalties after a 2-2 draw with the League Two side at Blundell Park.

It came after second-half efforts from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire almost spared their blushes having been two goals behind at the break.

However, Amorim's job is not under immediate threat despite the defeat compounding their poor start, talkSPORT understands.

As for Burnley, the Clarets travel to Old Trafford off the back of consecutive victories in the last week.

Having bounced back from their opening weekend defeat by beating Sunderland, Scott Parker's side saw off Derby to reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

They will have to overcome a worrying record at the Theatre of Dreams to pile more misery on United this weekend, though.

Amorim does not come into the match with any fresh injury concerns.

Alejandro Garnacho will not be involved as he edges closer to joining Chelsea, although the winger has not featured in a matchday squad yet this term.

Meanwhile, Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui remain sidelined until October and September, respectively.

As for the visitors, Parker also came away from their midweek cup clash without any new injury headaches.

Instead, Aaron Ramsey marked his first start for 18 months by opening the scoring at Turf Moor and could feature against United.

Manuel Benson continues to be assessed with regard to a return from an Achilles injury, whilst Zeki Amdouni will not feature.

Man United vs Burnley: Head-to-head

The home side have an impressive record against Burnley at Old Trafford across the last seven decades.

Their opponents this weekend have only won once in their last 25 visits to the ground, dating back to 1962.

That solitary victory came in January 2020 as they ran out 2-0 winners, although they are winless in their four Old Trafford meetings since.

However, their most recent trip to United ended in a 1-1 draw in April 2024 prior to the Clarets' relegation to the Championship.

Man United vs Burnley: What's been said?

Speaking immediately after the loss to Grimsby, Amorim explained: "I think this is a little bit the limit. I think something has to change.

"I think the team and the players spoke really loud today, so that's it. I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch.

"I think it's really clear what they spoke, so let's move on from this day. I think it was clear for everybody what happened today.

"The way we started the game without any intensity, we were completely lost.

"In this moment, we need to focus on the weekend and then we have time to think."

Parker addressed the challenges posed by facing the Red Devils in his pre-match press conference.

The Burnley boss told reporters: "We are playing against an exceptional and a historic football club.

"They have some top quality players, who can change games at any moment. We are under no illusions of the task we have ahead of us."
