Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have both been impressed with the transfer business that Liverpool has conducted so far this summer, with Florian Wirtz's arrival from Bayer Leverkusen having been confirmed on Friday.

The Reds have snapped up three players to date — Wirtz, his former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong, and highly rated goalkeeper Armin Pecsi — with more potentially on the way. And Lineker has liked the moves that Arne Slot and his sporting director, Richard Hughes, have made so far.

"Liverpool have been very impressive so far, I think, with the signings that they’ve done," Lineker said on The Rest Is Football podcast. "They’ve just completed Florian Wirtz — it’s a lot of dough for Bayer Leverkusen, but he’s a wonderfully talented player.

"Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for around £40 million. They join Jeremie Frimpong, who signed a couple of weeks ago, all three worth just under £200 million.

"Where do you think Wirtz will play? I mean, obviously he’s a player that can play as an eight, but also as a 10."

Shearer replied: "I think it will be floating between the two. I think he’ll have one, obviously Salah on one side and whoever on the other side, and it will be him, that will be the 10, the forward.

"They’ll just sort of rotate and do what they have to do. So I think that’s where he’ll play."

"Yeah, and [Alexander] Isak as the nine, right?" Lineker cheekily replied. "No chance," Shearer, a Newcastle United legend, insisted.

Liverpool could still sign a number nine this summer and Marc Guehi has emerged as a possible option at center-back. Isak, though, will be an incredibly hard deal for anyone to do.

Newcastle is insistent that it will not cash in on its star man, who scored 23 goals in the Premier League last season. Links with Liverpool, though, are ongoing and refusing to completely die down.

Other options as strikers have also been linked but Liverpool might need to move on Darwin Nunez before it coughs up even more cash for another signing. Napoli is believed to be interested in taking the Uruguayan to Italy.

Liverpool returns for pre-season training in just over two weeks. Its first friendly of the summer will be at Preston North End three weeks today. By then, there might have been even more changes to the roster in what is shaping up to be an exciting period.

Liverpool.com says: Wirtz is the standout player that the Reds have brought in so far this summer, by some distance. He is a real game-changing player coming through the door, and it is salivating to think about how he will link up with Salah.
