Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has admitted business decisions currently overrule football ones, amid surfacing Alexander Isak links to Liverpool. The Reds are among the clubs mooted with a swoop for the Swedish talisman as he continues to steal the headlines in a purple patch.

The Magpies' movement in the transfer window has been restricted - after being forced to tighten their belts due to the risk of exceeding the Profit and Sustainability rules (PSR) threshold. Last summer, Liverpool were linked with a sensational move for former Everton star Anthony Gordon with Newcastle weighing-up avenues to steer clear of the red line.

The Reds agreed a £75million transfer with Newcastle in June. However it fell through, before the north east club then offloaded Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to free up much-needed funds.

Isak's blistering run of form has earned him links with some of Europe's biggest clubs with Liverpool among them. And Howe has been forced to admit that financial decisions are still taking precedence over football, he said: "The business logic is taking over from the football logic.

"There may be football decisions you'd like to make. Nothing was bigger than the previous summer when we had to lose two highly promising young players; we were forced to, we had no choice.

"That is very much the business taking over from the football. I think we are still in that position."

Liverpool's main Premier League title rivals Arsenal are said to be targeting a forward, as they look to end their goal-scoring issues, and Isak has been a long-standing target for the Gunners. The Reds summer target, Gordon, penned a long-term extension at St. James' Park in October.
