Celtic Fans Had Fierce Reaction To Robbie Keane Being Linked With Club

While Martin O'Neill will take interim charge of the club over the coming weeks, Celtic's attention has already turned towards appointing a full-time manager to replace Brendan Rodgers.

The Antrim man's sudden departure from the club was not all that unexpected, especially when you consider the recent run of poor results coupled with his clashes with the board. In saying that, it has left Celtic in a difficult position.

Appointing a manager midseason is never straightforward, especially if your preferred target is already in another job. O'Neill will be viewed as a short-term solution at best, meaning the speedy appointment of a permanent coach will be paramount.

However, one name that was linked with the role overnight has already drawn a sizeable negative reaction.

Celtic Fans Had Fierce Reaction To Robbie Keane Being Linked With Manager's Job

Football journalist Ben Jacobs reported yesterday evening that Robbie Keane is among the names being considered to become the next Celtic manager.

The Irishman has had an impressive start to his managerial career. He would win an Israeli league title with Maccabi Tel Aviv during his sole campaign at the club, going on to lead Ferencvaros to the Hungarian title last season. He is currently still at the Budapest club, although they have experienced a mixed start to the season.

Of course, Keane is also a former Celtic player having had a very successful six months on loan in Glasgow back in 2010.

In normal circumstances, a player with that CV is something that would likely intrigue the club's supporters. It's fair to say that this has not been the case on this occasion.

The news linking Robbie Keane with a move to Celtic has been met with an overwhelmingly negative response.

You get the sense that the reasoning behind this negative reaction is related to Keane's past employers.

The Celtic supporters have consistently championed the cause of those struggling in Palestine down through the years, something that has only increased as a result of the recent conflict in Gaza.

They clearly feel that someone who was managing in Israel during this period would not be a good fit at Parkhead in spite of what has been a promising start to his managerial career.

This is an issue that has been mentioned in regards to Robbie Keane on numerous occasions in recent times, most notably when he was linked with the Ireland job over the last couple of months.

While it remains to be seen if Celtic will seriously pursue the Dubliner, it seems as though the appointment would not be a popular one in Glasgow.
