Rangers have completed the second biggest signing in their history by paying Everton an initial £8million for Youssef Chermiti. The 21-year-old Portugal youth international striker has put pen to paper on a four-year contract, and the fee could rise by a further £2m if he meets certain performance-related targets. His signing was confirmed on the same day that Cyriel Dessers left for Panathinaikos in a deal worth £3.5m.Chermiti has already cost more than the £6.5m Rangers paid Everton for Michael Ball back in 2001. The only more expensive acquisition in the Ibrox annals is the £12m it took to bring Tore Andre Flo from Chelsea a quarter of a century ago.Chermiti came through the ranks at Sporting Lisbon in his homeland, before earning an £11.5m move to Merseyside in August 2023. A key figure in that deal was Kevin Thelwell, the then director of football at Everton who is now Rangers’ sporting director.
