After South Africa eliminated defending champions Australia in the first semifinal of the Women's T20 World Cup, on Thursday (Oct 17), West Indies take on New Zealand in the second semifinal on Friday (Oct 18). Both sides have not entered the T20 WC final for quite long, hence, a lot is riding on them. The high-voltage clash will be held in Sharjah.

Talking about NZ, they were placed in Group A, termed 'group of death' also comprising India and Australia, but started off with a bang by beating India. They lost to Australia but turned it around with easy wins over Sri Lanka and Pakistan to enter the knockouts. For the Sophie Devine-led side, Georgia Plimmer, Suzie Bates have been in good form and ably assisted by finishing touches of Amelia Kerr, Devine and Brooke Halliday. Their bowlers have also been on the mark.

WI, on the other hand, weren't expected to make this far after a torrid ten-wicket loss to South Africa in their opener. The 2016 champions, however, revived their campaign with three inspiring wins, especially against England in what was a virtual quarterfinal clash from Group B, to enter the semis. For the one-time winners, Stafanie Taylor (who has knee issues and her fitness is unclear), Shemaine Campbelle, Deandra Dottin and young Qiana Joseph have done well with the bat. Even captain Hayley Mathews has shown signs of regaining form. In the bowling department, Afy Fletcher has led the aplomb.

The Mathews-led side would hope for a repeat of the 2016 semifinal result, where they beat the White Ferns, to enter the summit clash. NZ, on the other hand, will be determined to make their first-ever final since 2009.

The Sharjah pitch is likely to be tough for batters. Both captains might want to bat first as the surface will get slower and the pressure of a run-chase could come in handy.
