Liverpool transfer news as $54M 'talks held' and Marc Guehi plan emerges

A busy summer of transfers was promised, and Liverpool is delivering. Today could be the day that Florian Wirtz is confirmed, while there is plenty more to be done before the September 1 deadline.

Elsewhere, Liverpool will be selling a few players— though some, like Harvey Elliott, are currently away on international duty — and some more big decisions are coming. Sporting director Richard Hughes is currently overseeing a variety of moving parts, and things should continue to remain interesting for some time.

Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today. Two defenders are being linked with Jarell Quansah and Andy Robertson potentially heading out.

Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace)

Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen are in talks regarding a deal for Quansah, with the Reds potentially set to lose the 22-year-old. And The Times says Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi is being lined up as a replacement, or a possible free agent signing next year.

Newcastle United had four bids for Guehi rejected by Crystal Palace last summer. The final one was worth $87 million (£65 million), with the South London side holding out for $94 million (£70 million).

This summer, though, Guehi only has one year left remaining on his contract. As a result, he could leave for nothing in 2026 unless Crystal Palace reduces the asking price.

Liverpool.com says: For a reasonable fee, the Reds would be getting a good player in Guehi. For anything like what Newcastle was being asked to pay, though, it shouldn't be considered.

Jorrel Hato (Ajax)

Liverpool has held transfer talks over a possible deal for young Ajax center-back Jorrel Hato, according to Football Transfers. The Reds have long been linked with a move for the teenager, who is valued at around $54 million (£40 million).

The 19-year-old can play center-back and left-back. He has Champions League experience and is one of the most highly-rated young defenders around, with Virgil van Dijk said to be a big fan of his.

If Hato were to move to Liverpool, he would be able to learn from fellow countryman Van Dijk for a couple of years before potentially taking over from the Reds' number four.

"The smartest thing is to look at it per season," Hato told Ajax’s club website during a recent interview, as he was asked about his future and what his goals are. "That's what I do.

"Of course, you want to achieve things in the end: the Champions League, a World Cup and a European Championship. But I still have plenty of time. I don't think I absolutely have to win the Champions League in two years."

Liverpool.com says: Hato being able to play center-back and left-back could be appealing amid interest in Robertson and Quansah. Getting someone who could fill in both roles could be appealing.
