Viktor Gyokeres to Man Utd boost as Fabrizio Romano says Sporting CP have found 'priority' replacement

Despite recent silence, Manchester United remains set on signing a new striker this summer.

It had been assumed that Ineos was going to sign a new striker this summer as a priority.

However, Manchester United’s plans changed after Liam Delap rejected a move to Old Trafford, opting to sign with Chelsea instead, with Champions League football on offer.

Due to this, Ineos instead focused on the number 10 position with Matheus Cunha arriving at United as the first signing of the summer. Cunha will soon be joined by United-bound Bryan Mbeumo, with the deal very close to completion.

By signing two Premier League-proven forwards, United have potentially revolutionised the squad that managed just 44 goals last season in the league total, with the duo scoring 35 between them alone.

However, Ineos are not done. United still want to sign a number nine to overhaul a tired attack that needed open-heart surgery and is getting exactly that.

Sporting CP eyeing Luis Suarez to replace Viktor Gyokeres

Over the past few weeks, all talks around United and a striker have gone relatively quiet. This is after Viktor Gyokeres outlined a preference to join Arsenal over United this summer.

Some took this as the end of interest in the Swede; however, United retain an interest in Gyokeres, and the player is also leaving the door to Old Trafford open, United in Focus understands.

Well, if this deal is to go ahead, United have just seen a domino fall with Sporting identifying their replacement for Gyokeres, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer expert has claimed that Sporting have now chosen Almeria’s Luis Javier Suarez as the new striker they want when Gyokeres leaves the club this summer.

The Colombian scored 27 goals in La Liga 2 last season and now finds himself as the ‘priority target’ and top of Sporting’s shortlist to replace Gyokeres.

This replacement will likely be underwhelming for Sporting supporters, as it has big shoes to fill. However, Gyokeres came from the Championship, and so the club’s recruitment is certainly not to be doubted.

Ruben Amorim’s stance on bringing Gyokeres to Manchester United

Ever since Amorim was named the Manchester United head coach, it was almost expected that he would look to bring at least one of his Sporting players with him.

Gyokeres was an early favourite to make the jump and has remained so ever since. However, with the striker’s demands over Champions League football, Amorim said United wouldn’t sign Gyokeres if he was only looking for European football.

So, with the chances of a move remaining ‘possible’, what is Amorim thinking about signing the striker he turned into a world beater?

Well, reliable United journalist Laurie Whitwell has told Stretford Paddock that Amorim remains ‘definitely interested’ in adding Gyokeres to his brand new attack at Old Trafford.

If United can sign Gyokeres, it would hand Amorim a front three that stacks up against any in the Premier League, and really, there is no excuse not to be scoring goals for fun during the 2025-26 season.
