Gareth Southgate Linked With Shock Return To International Management

Despite being England's most successful manager over the last half century, it's fair to say that quite a few of the country's supporters were keen to see Gareth Southgate move on at the end of last summer's Euros.

England may have reached the final of that tournament, but there was a sense that they were rather fortunate to do so. They performed poorly in the majority of their matches and were lucky to be placed on a much weaker half of the draw in the knockout stages.

Some believed that Southgate was holding England back, despite reaching two major tournament finals under his leadership. In the end, the 54-year old made the decision to step aside.

Southgate's next move in football had been unclear. He had been linked with Manchester United, a rumour that was met with quite a bit of resistance from the club's supporters.

He certainly seemed more suited to international football, with an unlikely prospective job now emerging.

Gareth Southgate Linked With Shock International Job

Polish outlet Przeglad Sportowy Onet are reporting that Gareth Southgate has applied to become the next manager of Poland.

The Poles are currently on the hunt for a new manager, with previous coach Michal Probierz resigning last week on the back of a fallout with star striker Robert Lewandowski. The Barcelona man refused to play for the national team while Probierz was still in charge after he was stripped of the captaincy.

This would certainly be left-field destination for Southgate, although it has been suggested that he is keen on the role. Poland currently sit third in their World Cup qualifying group, taking six points from their first three games in a group that also features the likes of the Netherlands and Finland.

However, they do have a strong track record of reaching tournaments, having qualified for two World Cups and five European Championships on the spin.

It would be an intriguing return to football for Southgate.
