Denis Shapovalov responds when asked if he thinks Jannik Sinner will win the US Open this year

Jannik Sinner was able to hold off the pressure put on him by Denis Shapovalov in his latest win at the US Open.

Sinner’s fans had previously been angered by Shapovalov, after the Canadian made comments about the world number one last year.

Having won their only previous meeting, Shapovalov was actually looking forward to playing Sinner, and made a positive start after winning the first set.

However, he was unable to go all the way, with Sinner impressing even Martina Navratilova with his comeback victory.

Denis Shapovalov predicts if Jannik Sinner will now win the US Open

After Shapovalov was beaten by Sinner, 5-7 6-4 6-3 6-3, he headed to his post-match press conference to speak to media.

Marion Bartoli believes only one player can challenge Carlos Alcaraz and Sinner this year, but Shapovalov did not entirely agree.

While Shapovalov accepted that Sinner and Alcaraz are the standout favourites, he suggested his performance shows that they can be vulnerable.

“I mean it’s really tough to say,” said Shapovalov. “There’s so many great players in the draw and you definitely have to probably give it to him or Carlos, the two favourites. Obviously they’ve played I think almost every finals together the last few months.

“So most likely you know the chances are it could be one of them two but to be honest there’s there’s a lot of great players. I mean I was able to put pressure on on Jannik today so who says that that another player can’t do the same.”

Why Jannik Sinner could be vulnerable ahead of his next US Open match?

Sinner has only lost one set in his first three rounds this year, as he looks to become the first man to defend the US Open singles title since Roger Federer in 2008.

However, he may now have a big hurdle standing in his way, as Sinner is now set to play Alexander Bublik.

Sinner has won his four of his six previous meetings against Bublik, but their most recent encounter was won by the Kazakhstani player.

During the grass court season, Bublik beat Sinner at the Halle Open, the tournament where he has beaten the Italian twice.

Bublik is currently on an 11-match winning streak, and has just knocked out 14th seed Tommy Paul.

This is Bublik’s best ever performance at a hard court major, and he will now look to cause a huge upset against Sinner.
