Everton transfer stance on Omari Hutchinson after David Moyes pitch impresses team-mate

Everton have been linked with a move for Omari Hutchinson of Ipswich Town

Everton manager David Moyes enjoys an enviable reputation for developing hungry, young players into top Premier League performers, so an article highlighting how he worked his magic on Jarrod Bowen at West Ham United and could repeat the trick with Ipswich Town’s Omari Hutchinson made for a compelling read.

The piece, by Tom Collomosse in the Daily Mail, contained the headline that Hutchinson is supposedly the Premier League’s most wanted man with four top flight clubs chasing his signature and only Florian Wirtz and Desire Doue ahead of him in one key area.

The tantalising ‘key area’ in question is dribbling, and it’s pointed out that only Wirtz – who Liverpool have just splashed out a club record £116million on – and Doue, who inspired Paris Saint-Germain to their first Champions League success, bagging a brace in their 5-0 demolition job for Internazionale in the final in Munich, have completed more dribbles in Europe’s top five leagues, with 95 successful ones for Hutchinson – the same as Morgan Rogers who has performed brilliantly for Unai Emery at Aston Villa over the last 18 months.

We’re also told bigger clubs are lurking and that Hutchinson is a target for Everton with Brentford, West Ham and Fulham also monitoring his progress along with Bundesliga pair Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.

The article states: “Having already proved himself in the Championship (netting 10 times on loan for Ipswich in 2023/24, before joining them permanently for a club-record £20million fee) Hutchinson showed last season he could deliver against high-profile opponents, with goals against Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham. Yet there is work to do: three goals and two assists are not going to blow the house down, and Hutchinson needs to improve his finishing and decision-making in key areas.

“Jarrod Bowen is an intriguing comparison to make here. David Moyes brought Bowen to West Ham from Hull in January 2020 and turned him into a proven Premier League performer at West Ham. Back for a second spell at Everton, it is tempting to wonder whether Moyes can repeat the trick with Hutchinson.

“Comparing their first full seasons in the Premier League, most of the numbers are in Bowen’s favour – but the England international was 23 when he joined West Ham and had played 141 senior matches. Hutchinson had managed only 60 before last season.”

Before we go any further here, for full disclosure, the ECHO understands there is nothing in the link with Hutchinson, and he is not an active target for Everton at this stage. However, in a transfer window that promises to be a busy one for the Blues with the number of new recruits required potentially moving into double digits, he at least fits the profile of the kind of player that you think Moyes would be looking at to take the club forwards.

Everton were willing to do business with Ipswich Town earlier this summer with their unusually public pursuit of Liam Delap. Ultimately, the Tractor Boys’ top scorer did not follow up his signing of the wallpaper in the hallway of 37 Goodison Road with a Blues contract.

The 22-year-old, who netted a dozen Premier League goals last term for the relegated Suffolk outfit, was lured to Chelsea by the prospect of Champions League football and the opportunity to reunite with manager Enzo Maresca who had been his coach at Manchester City’s development squad, but the Delap camp at his agent, CAA Stellar were particularly impressed by Moyes’ pitch and the way the Premier League’s most-experienced manager conducts himself and his business.

Like captain James McAtee of Manchester City and Tom Fellows of West Bromwich Albion, who have been linked with moves to Everton, Hutchinson is part of Lee Carsley’s squad who have reached the final of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship as they defend their crown in Slovakia.

The 21-year-old from Redhill, Surrey, has started all but one of the matches and has operated on the right of a front three against the Czech Republic, on the right of a midfield three against Germany, on the left of a midfield three against Spain and in the centre of a midfield three against the Netherlands. If the Blues don’t actually make a move for Hutchinson, it might be prudent to at least go for someone of a similar ilk.
