Jose Mourinho's response speaks volumes amid shock Leeds United links

Leeds United are considering sacking manager Daniel Farke just days after he led the club to promotion to the Premier League, prompting Jose Mourinho to be linked with the Elland Road job

Jose Mourinho has already made his feelings clear on becoming Leeds United manager as current Leeds boss Daniel Farke is facing an uncertain future.

Despite their promotion back to the Premier League being confirmed on Monday, Farke's position is under threat, with reports suggesting that he could be replaced by a more experienced manager with the aim of avoiding relegation next season. In Farke's previous two seasons in the Premier League, both as manager of Norwich after winning the Championship title, the Canaries went straight back down.

The German could therefore be axed before Leeds make their top-flight return and few managers are more experienced in the rigours of the Premier League than Mourinho. The former Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham boss is currently in charge of Turkish giants Fenerbahce - but it's not been plain sailing.

Having been sacked by Roma in January 2024, the 'Special One' found himself back in work at the beginning of this season. Fenerbahce are currently five points adrift of bitter rivals Galatasaray in the Super Lig title race with six games remaining.

They were dumped out of the Europa League round of 16 by Rangers on penalties and recently exited the Turkish Cup. On multiple occasions, Mourinho has vented his frustration at the quality of officiating in Turkey, claiming that there's a 'toxic' environment in the league.

Earlier this season, the 62-year-old said that when he leaves Istanbul, he'd be keen to join a club who don't play European football. Leeds, of course, won't be in any UEFA competitions next season, with their sole focus on domestic football.

And Mourinho, despite his history of winning titles, claimed that he'd be 'ready' to join a club scrapping at the other end of the table. "The best thing I have to do is when I leave Fener is that I go to a club that doesn’t play in UEFA competition," he explained.

"So a club at the bottom in England who needs a coach in two years, I'm ready to go. I don't want to speak anymore about it. I want to speak about the game."

Mourinho climbed down from his headline-grabbing comments shortly after, though, saying: "I made a joke. I get upset, and I'm not in the period of my career to get upset. I'm in the period of my career to be happy all the time and at this moment playing in European competitions, I am getting upset all the time.

"But I'm not going to fight relegation. It's too hard! Honestly, I believe that has to be the hardest thing. It's more difficult than playing for titles. It has to be very hard emotionally, because it's something that changes lives. I think it's brave guys that do it."

Leeds haven't commented on the bombshell report concerning Farke but a source dismissed it as 'a disgrace' to Leeds Live.
