Defender Luke Beecken will make his AFL debut for the Brisbane Lions in Friday’s clash with Fremantle at Optus Stadium.Defender Luke Beecken will make his AFL debut for the Brisbane Lions in Friday’s clash with Fremantle at Optus Stadium.Beecken was the Lions second selection in the 2024 Mid-Season Rookie Draft from Adelaide-based club’s SMOSH West Lakes and Woodville West Torrens in the SANFL.The 24-year-old dashing rebound defender, who played in a SANFL premiership before becoming a Lion, has impressed in the VFL and is an exciting inclusion.Brisbane Lions senior coach Chris Fagan informed the playing group of Beecken’s debut after Thursday’s Captain’s Run at Optus Stadium.“Since you’ve been at the club, I would have to say out of all the young blokes you are the one who comes to see me in my office to talk about how you are going with your football on a regular basis because you want to be the best that you can be,” Fagan said“And it has taken you a fair while to get to this point where you get an AFL game.“But I know however many minutes you actually get you are going to come out and give it everything you have got and that’s all we can ask of you.“So your debut has really been hard-earned, you’ve been in good form in the VFL all year and I am sure your family will be really proud of you.“Hopefully you can play a part in a really good performance tomorrow.Beecken, known for his spend and ball use across halfback, then spoke briefly in front of his teammates following the announcement.“Thanks to the coaches for giving me this opportunity,” Beecken said.“And thank you to you players who since I came over here have made it a really easy transition into the AFL lifestyle and are always there for me to seek help.
