Tony McEntee has stepped down as Sligo senior football manager in the wake of Saturday evening's Tailteann Cup quarter-final loss to Fermanagh at Brewster Park.The Erne men beat Sligo by 0-21 to 1-16 to end the Yeats County's hopes of a return to Croke Park in the last four of the Tailteann CupMcEntee, who was in his fifth season in charge of Sligo, had targeted the Tailteann as a trophy to win for his side - and there will be an acute sense of disappointment amongst the outgoing management and players that they were unable to go further in this year's competition.He spoke to reporters after Saturday's game.AdvertisementThe Crossmaglen native confirmed his intention to step down immediately after Saturday's evening game.During his five years in charge, McEntee presided over 58 FBD, league and championship matches with Sligo, 34 of which they won.His five-year stint makes him the longest-serving Sligo senior football manager to date.AdvertisementSligo GAA Chairman Declan Rouse, in a statement on Saturday evening, said: "There is a lot of good work being done throughout Sligo football and Tony has contributed hugely to that effort."Over the past five seasons, Tony and his colleagues have built a strong culture of performance which us well-positioned for the future."He has helped us create some great memories and we believe the future is bright."We wish Tony the best in his next adventure - hopefully not against us!"
