Man City vs Liverpool LIVE: Premier League goal updates as Haaland and Nico score

0
Manchester City welcome Liverpool to the Eithad this afternoon as the old rivals meet for another scrap.

During their time tussling for the title, these two shared compelling battles in some of the best quality Premier League matches in recent memory.

In the opening stanza of the season, Arsenal have risen above both of them and lead the way at the summit of English football.

But victory for either side today will provide a telling reminder that the race for the title isn’t over quite yet.

Erling Haaland arrives in simply unstoppable form with 21 goals already in the bag.

Chance for City!

48: City are looking to kill this game off. Doku – the best player in the first half – is at it again as he bursts down the left and sends in a ball across the face of goal – but there’s no-one there to finish it off.

Man City 2-0 Liverpool.

Back underway!

46: The second half is underway here. Man City have a two-goal lead and there’s no changes from either team yet.

Let’s play!

HALF TIME: Man City 2-0 Liverpool

A dramatic opening 45 minutes here at the Etihad.

Haaland saw a penalty saved before opening the scoring on 29 minutes. Van Dijk’s equaliser was then controversially ruled out following a VAR check before Nico made it 2-0 just before half-time.

City have a two goal lead – but feels like there is plenty more to come.

We’ll be back shortly!

Nico doubles Man City’s lead!

45+3: MAN CITY HAVE TWO!

It’s Nico right before half-time – that’s a dagger to the hearts of Liverpool fans.

The City star’s strike from distance takes a deflection off Van Dijk and flies past Mamardashvili. Silva gets the assist.

Man City 2-0 Liverpool.

Why Liverpool’s equaliser was chalked off

45+1: ‘The referee’s call of offside and no goal to Liverpool was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Robertson in an offside position and deemed to be making an obvious action directly in front of the goalkeeper,’ Premier League Match Centre posted on X.

Silva booked!

41: City’s Silva is shown a yellow card for stopping a counter attack. That’s the third of the match so far.

VAR denies Liverpool an equaliser!

39: Offt – drama here at the Etihad. It looked like Van Dijk had made it 1-1 but Robertson is alleged to be offside. The goal will NOT stand.

Man City remain 1-0 ahead. Liverpool are fuming.

Van Dijk equalises – but VAR is checking

39: Van Dijk has levelled it up at 1-1 with a header – but VAR is checking it…

Mac Allister booked!

36: Mac Allister is the first Liverpool player to be shown a yellow card for a foul on Doku. Correct decision there.

Haaland fires City ahead!

29: GOAL! HAALAND FIRES MAN CITY IN FRONT!

Erling Haaland makes up for his penalty being saved earlier on as he gives Pep Guardiola’s side the lead.

Matheus Nunes whips in the ball from the right – and it skims off Ibrahima Konate’s head – before finding Haaland, as his header loops into the back of the net.

Man City 1-0 Liverpool.

Chance for Doku and Nico booked!

27: Doku has been the best player on the pitch today for either team. Good chance for him here as he beats Bradley into the box but he’s denied by Mamardashvili.

City’s Nico has just been booked, by the way. The first yellow card of today’s match.

Agony for Haaland

26: Here’s how Haaland looked after failing to convert that penalty around 13 minutes ago…

Still the biggest moment in the game so far. 0-0.

Injury for Man City?

21: City star O’Reilly is on the floor holding his calf but he seems OK to continue for now.

0-0 at the Etihad.

How are the statistics looking?

19: City are well ahead on expected goals (xG) after the opening 20 minutes or so.

Mamardashvili saves Haaland penalty!

13: Mamardashvili has saved Haaland’s penalty! But is the Liverpool goalkeeper off his line too early?

No – he’s not. A huge moment for Liverpool as it remains 0-0.

City given a penalty!

11: City get the penalty as Doku goes down inside the box after being caught by Mamardashvili. Haaland is stepping up…

VAR checking for a penalty!

10: Offt – could be a penalty for City here! VAR is checking.

Chance for Salah!

9: Liverpool’s first attack of note – and it’s Salah – but Donnarumma deals with it easily. Still 0-0.

Chance for Foden!

7: Foden has his head in his hands after a poor first touch. That would’ve been a great chance for City after a brilliant pass from Doku but the Englishman wastes it.

Chance for Doku!

6: First attack of note – and it’s for City – as Doku bursts into the box, but Mac Allister is there to boot the ball away. 0-0.
