Arsenal 2-0 Olympiacos: Arsenal Player Ratings

0
Arsenal overcame a stubborn Olympiacos side to win 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium in the UEFA Champions League.

Two goals scored by Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka made it two wins from two in European football, following another 2-0 victory over Athletic Club in the opening fixture a fortnight ago.

In a game where Mikel Arteta praised several Gunners players, Arsenal had a number of standout performers, including captain Martin Ødegaard, who was awarded the man of the match.

Arsenal

David Raya – 8

Raya made a sensational save in the first half, tipping a sublime effort from Daniel Podence over the crossbar.

The former Wolves winger must have thought he had scored, but Raya had other ideas and managed to defend his clean sheet.

Ben White – 6

White is regaining fitness after suffering a number of injuries in the last few months.

It was not a display to write home about, but White did show moments of quality as he linked up with Martinelli.

William Saliba – 7

Fresh off signing a new long-term deal, Saliba defended well to retain the Gunners’ clean sheet.

Gabriel Magalhães – 7

Much like Saliba, Gabriel did equally well to repel the Olympiacos attackers, who threatened the Gunners' backline in spells.

Myles Lewis-Skelly – 8

Myles Lewis-Skelly has found it difficult to usurp Riccardo Calafiori from his left-back role this season, so he will need to take his chances in order to reclaim that position.

He did that against the Greek champions and looked back to his best, delivering several quality crosses that were not converted.

Martin Ødegaard – 9

This was a vintage Martin Ødegaard display. The Arsenal captain created four chances and provided an assist for Saka’s late goal.

After sustaining a shoulder injury, Arteta will hope that he can keep his talismanic midfielder fit for the rest of the season.

Martin Zubimendi – 6

Zubimendi has been nominated for Premier League player of the month after scoring twice in the 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, but was not quite at his best against Olympiacos.

He lost the ball a few times, but did provide good cover for the defence in the second half.

Mikel Merino – 6

Fresh after scoring against Newcastle, Merino would have been hoping to get his name among the goals again.

However, the Greek side nullified Merino well throughout the match.

Gabriel Martinelli – 8

Martinelli is in a fine run of form and extended that as he opened the scoring at the Emirates Stadium.

As Viktor Gyökeres’ effort hit the post, Martinelli tapped home to ensure the Gunners took the lead. The Brazilian should have scored earlier in the game as he nodded a delightful Lewis-Skelly cross wide of Konstantinos Tzolakis’ goal.

Viktor Gyökeres – 6

Some may say a striker has failed if he has not scored, but Gyökeres’ link-up play was very impressive. Often, he would flick the ball onto his teammates to receive.

He should have scored, but it was a decent display, nonetheless.

Leandro Trossard – 6

Much like Gyökeres, Trossard should have scored a few himself. It was these missed chances that saw the Gunners make the game a nervy watch for fans inside and outside the stadium.

Substitutes

Jurrien Timber – 6

Looked impressive after he replaced White

Declan Rice – 7

Came on for Merino and added an extra dose of creativity in the midfield. His fizzed passes should have led to more goals for the Gunners.

Eberechi Eze – 6

Did not really get a sniff of the ball when entering the field.

Bukayo Saka – 7

Took his goal well and should have grabbed an assist if not for great defending, as Ødegaard’s shot was well blocked by a desperate Olympiacos challenge.

Cristhian Mosquera – 7

The defender did well to replace Gabriel and slot in like he was the colossal Brazilian himself.
